03 Fundamentals & Business
Alibaba Group Holding Limited is China's largest e-commerce and cloud computing conglomerate, operating platforms including Taobao, Tmall, and Alibaba.com along with its Alibaba Cloud division, logistics arm Cainiao, digital media, and international commerce through AliExpress and Lazada. Founded by Jack Ma in 1999, Alibaba is listed on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The company has faced significant regulatory pressure from Chinese authorities since 2020, including a record antitrust fine, the blocked IPO of Ant Group, and management restructuring. Alibaba is exploring a potential reorganization into separate business units.
04 Crypto Exposure
Alibaba's crypto exposure is limited by the regulatory environment in which it operates. China has banned cryptocurrency trading and mining, and Alibaba's core platforms do not support crypto transactions. Alibaba Cloud has offered blockchain-as-a-service products for enterprise supply chain, logistics, and identity applications on permissioned chains. Ant Group, Alibaba's fintech affiliate, participates in China's digital yuan (e-CNY) CBDC rollout. Alibaba itself holds no material crypto assets and is structurally constrained from entering public cryptocurrency markets under Chinese law.

07 More
Why can't Alibaba offer Bitcoin or crypto trading services?
China banned cryptocurrency trading, exchange operations, and mining in 2021. As a company headquartered in China and operating primarily within Chinese regulatory jurisdiction, Alibaba's platforms cannot legally facilitate crypto trading for mainland Chinese users. This ban applies broadly and there is no indication of near-term regulatory reversal.
What is Alibaba Cloud's blockchain business?
Alibaba Cloud offers blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS) products built on permissioned blockchain frameworks including Hyperledger Fabric and its own Ant Chain technology. These are sold to enterprise clients for supply chain traceability, cross-border trade finance, and document verification u2014 applications that use distributed ledger technology without involving public cryptocurrencies.
What are the key risks for Alibaba investors?
Risks include ongoing Chinese regulatory intervention in technology and fintech sectors, U.S.-China geopolitical tensions that could trigger delisting of U.S.-listed shares or restrict American institutional ownership, slower Chinese consumer spending growth, intense domestic competition from JD.com, Pinduoduo, and ByteDance, uncertainty around the Ant Group IPO, and execution risk in reorganizing Alibaba into independent business units.
