Key Insights:
- Ethereum whales added tens of thousands of ETH to long positions this week.
- Spot Ether ETFs recorded $1.83B inflows in five days, outpacing Bitcoin funds.
- Goldman Sachs and advisers emerged as leading holders of Ethereum ETFs.
Ethereum (ETH) drew massive institutional and whale demand this week, with new purchases and spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows eclipsing Bitcoin activity.
On-chain data and market disclosures showed whales and investment firms expanding Ethereum exposure as ETH traded near $4,570 on Aug. 28. The latest buying spree came as spot Ether ETFs in the United States absorbed over ten times the inflows of their Bitcoin counterparts.
Whales Double Down on Ethereum
Whale accumulation accelerated. Crypto Rover reported a trader raised his Ethereum long to 86,845 ETH, worth nearly $298 million. The same account highlighted Tom Lee’s BitMine, which acquired 42,867 ETH valued at $198 million.

These moves added to a broader rotation of capital into Ether. Binance, meanwhile, continued offloading ETH and Solana, with reserves at 100.67% according to market observer Ted (@TedPillows). Traders questioned where the extra Ethereum supply was coming from as whales positioned for further gains.
Spot Ether ETFs Surge Past Bitcoin Funds
Institutional demand was even clearer in ETF data. CoinGlass tracked $1.83 billion in Ether ETF inflows since Aug. 21, compared with just $171 million for Bitcoin funds. Wednesday alone brought $310.3 million into nine Ether ETFs, against $81.1 million across eleven Bitcoin products.
Nate Geraci, president of ETF consultancy The ETF Store, said Ether ETFs have approached $10 billion in inflows since early July. Aggregate inflows hit $13.6 billion across 13 months of trading, the majority concentrated in recent weeks.
By contrast, spot Bitcoin ETFs, available for 20 months, reported $54 billion in aggregate inflows. But the latest figures highlighted a sharp momentum shift. Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano called the divergence “brutal.”
Wall Street Turns to “The Token”
VanEck CEO Jan van Eck described Ethereum as “very much what I call the Wall Street token” in an interview with Fox Business. The passing of the GENIUS Act stablecoin legislation in July strengthened Ethereum’s position, as the network holds the largest share of stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets.

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart added that investment advisers dominate ETF holdings. Securities and Exchange Commission filings showed $1.3 billion in adviser exposure, with Goldman Sachs alone holding $712 million.
The trend underscored the pivot of institutional portfolios toward Ethereum over Bitcoin in the current cycle.
ETH Price Action and Market Context
Ethereum traded at $4,572, down 1.2% on the day per CoinGecko. The token gained 5% from Tuesday’s low, outpacing Bitcoin’s 2.8% rebound. Technical data from TradingView placed ETH above key Fibonacci retracement levels, with support near $4,295 and resistance at $4,516.

Relative strength index (RSI) readings held around 57, suggesting balanced momentum after weeks of volatility. Analysts pointed to whale positioning and ETF inflows as stabilizing factors.
Still, Bitcoin maintained higher aggregate ETF flows overall. With $54 billion accumulated since inception, its dominance in institutional portfolios remained intact. But Ethereum’s faster recovery and fresh whale bets injected new confidence.
Ethereum’s growing role in Wall Street portfolios and surging ETF inflows reinforced its appeal. Whales accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars in ETH as funds absorbed record inflows. The divergence with Bitcoin raised questions about long-term leadership between the two largest cryptocurrencies.
While ETH held near $4,570, traders monitored whether inflows and whale activity could drive another push toward the $5,000 region. For now, Ethereum emerged as the market’s preferred allocation amid shifting policy and investment flows.
