Fed to Hold Crypto Conference As CFTC Gives Polymarket Greenlight

Key Insights:

  • The Federal Reserve is set to hold the ‘Payments Innovation’ conference to discuss stablecoins, AI, and tokenization of financial products and services.
  • The CFTC recommended no action on Polymarket, with the decision set to be effective immediately.
  • Recent activities regarding crypto and the broader financial markets indicate that regulators continue to open up to crypto.

The Federal Reserve (Fed), alongside other regulators, made yet another bold progressive step in crypto adoption. They continued to ease crypto hurdles with the recent developments, indicating a new phase in the global financial system.

The Fed Chair Jerome Powell and his team planned to host a crypto conference. On the other hand, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) gave Polymarket a green light to continue with its services.

Fed to Hold ‘Payment Innovation’ Conference

On September 3rd, the Fed announced its plans to host a conference on Tuesday, October 21st, focused on crypto innovation. The event will be dubbed as ‘Payments Innovation’, as reported by Scott Melker of The Wolf Of All Streets Podcast.

From the announcement, the Fed laid out three main agendas that were to be discussed. They included stablecoins, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and tokenization, which signaled growing blockchain integration.

For context, the discussion was centered around bridging traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi). This could be achieved by streamlining stablecoin use cases in the existing business models. Moreover, by the combination of AI and bills, collectively with the tokenization of financial services and products.

Participants expected the conference to give clarity and a go-ahead for cross-border rails and programmable payments. It was the primary agenda for the event. Similarly, new liquidity would flow from the RWAs’ tokenization. The event really meant a massive win for the crypto community.

These updates come as the U.S. money supply hit a new peak of $22.12 trillion. These actions by the regulators set a precedent for this capital to flow into Bitcoin (BTC) and other crypto products.

Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs were leading the capital inflow in the last four months. Altcoins also had better trading volumes than BTC, with the focus now on Fed rate cuts.

Prediction Markets Win as CFTC Approves Polymarket Operations in the U.S.

The regulators’ hand was not only felt from the Fed, but also on the CFTC and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Specifically, CFTC gave a clear signal to Polymarket to carry on with its activities.

The gesture was a huge win for the prediction markets, as this could be a stamp for legitimacy in the U.S. Thus, Polymarket could again go live in the U.S. after its services were halted by the CFTC in 2022.

Per DustyBC Crypto’s X post, Polymarket was to continue providing its event-based contracts on its platform as authorities eased the grip. However, CFTC staff noted that the letter applied narrowly in other circumstances but was comparable to a similar ‘no action’ letter earlier issued.

The prediction markets have become an integral part of the financial system, with about 100 new entrants. From this new proportion, sixty percent went to memes, while 30% were in the launch process. Less than 5% were operational for over a year.

Polymarket’s win for the broader prediction markets expanded its user base to the U.S. It would capitalize on Polymarket’s earlier collaboration with X (formerly Twitter).

How Regulators are Opening Up

Regulators were easing crypto rules, which escalated activities that were associated with these institutions.

From crypto ETFs to ETPs, the game was changing with hundreds of ETF filings awaiting approval on the SEC’s desk. The SEC recently approved US exchanges like Nasdaq to offer BTC ETFs. Also, the SEC roundtable hosted in June on DeFi affirmed bridging with TradFi.

In conclusion, before the end of the year, more regulations are expected to be eased. The times were changing, and so were the investment approaches across the globe.
