Gold to Bitcoin Capital Rotation As Bitwise Predicts BTC Could Hit $242K

Gold has long been regarded as a safe haven for the world, offering substantial gains to traditional investors who adopted this strategy. However, the gains are nowhere close to those of Bitcoin (BTC) when considering from the period the digital currency was launched.

The comparison between the two assets has been intense, especially as nations embrace the latter as an alternative store of wealth. However, the two assets have exhibited similar movements, except in the last few months when gold has continued to outperform Bitcoin.

Gold Loses 5% Capital to BTC After Hitting New Peak

On the day, gold hit a new peak of $4,380 but was followed by a sharp drop, losing 5.30% of its capitalization to Bitcoin. The price of gold declined from this peak to around $4,119 at the time of writing.

As a result of this capital rotation, BTC price reclaimed the $110,000 level, showing complete contrast between the two. This shift from gold to BTC signaled rising conviction about Bitcoin’s upside movement as it broke a previous higher high.

This rotation has been a lifelong goal of crypto enthusiasts. For instance, Hal Finney, the first person to receive BTC, held this belief since May 2000, according to a post on X by Joao Wedson, the founder of Alphractal. Hal Finney said,

“Gold is boring, just a hunk of yellow metal. In the long run, nanotech will be able to extract it from seawater. It is unlikely anyone [will] devote much effort to it.”

This has been the mantra for most Bitcoin Marxists, such as Michael Saylor and other institutional leaders. Talking of institutions, Bitwise backed this rotation with a bold prediction.

Bitwise Predicts Bitcoin Could Hit $242K

As per the chart of Bitcoin Price vs. Hypothetical Prices, it denoted that BTC prices went up after every rotation. There was a clear and linear correlation between the percentage of above-ground supply market cap rotated to Bitcoin and the resultant price of BTC.

A small 1 percent capital rotation could raise Bitcoin’s price to $134,270 from its current value. As the percentage increased, the projections also rose, as illustrated in the chart. A 5 percent transfer of capital out of gold would push the price of Bitcoin to a new high of an estimated $242,391, as per Bitwise.

This analysis highlighted the overwhelming size of the gold market cap, about $29 trillion, compared to Bitcoin’s $2 trillion. This meant the impact on a relatively smaller market, such as Bitcoin, from a small divestment in the huge market capitalization of gold could be multiplicative.

This indicated that Bitcoin was likely to be sensitive to institutional use and asset rebalancing, particularly now that it was undervalued compared to gold.

Bitcoin-to-Gold Ratio Hits 3-Year Low

The ratio, which hit a 3-year low, demonstrated the undervaluation of Bitcoin relative to gold. The current outlook closely resembled the 3-year low of 2020, which was followed by a 12x increase in the price of Bitcoin to $52,000 in 2021.

These statistics indicated the ratio of 40 was the highest this year. However, the current reading of 22 indicated that Bitcoin was still underpriced relative to gold, as per analysis by Pepesso on X.

In the current setup where BTC trades at $110K, a similar estimate could pump the price past $200K, coinciding with Bitwise’s projection, which was a little higher.

This estimate was justified by historical trends and signals such as the ISM Manufacturing Index and the MVRV Ratio, which was at 1.9, under 3.7 for overbought conditions.

Altogether, the gold-to-Bitcoin capital rotation was underway, but its sustainability was dependent on the general market conditions.
