MARA Holdings stock popped by over 15% today, July 9. This happened as the Bitcoin mining giant announced a huge acquisition in Texas. It jumped to $13.80, up by 20% from its lowest level this week and 110% from the year-to-date low.
MARA Holdings Stock Jumps After a Large Acquisition
MARA, a top Bitcoin mining company, said it bought a large-scale powered land site in Matagorda County, Texas, to expand into AI data centers. The land is about 1,200 acres. This will give it access to 1 GW of grid capacity by October next year. It will then get another 2 GW of power by 2028.
In a statement, the company said it will develop the site in partnership with Starwood Digital Ventures, part of Starwood Capital Group. It’s a firm with over $130 billion in assets under management (AUM).
The acquisition is part of MARA’s strategy to diversify its business into the booming AI data center industry. It has joined other Bitcoin mining companies that have embraced the industry. Some of these firms are Riot Platforms, CleanSpark, IREN, TeraWulf, and Hive Digital.
MARA Holdings’ goal is to use its experience running large Bitcoin mining operations to create dedicated data centers. Both hyperscalers and smaller firms in the AI industry would use them.
Some Bitcoin mining companies that have expanded into the industry have become highly successful. For example, CoreWeave has moved from being a Bitcoin miner into the biggest neo-cloud company in the world. It has a revenue backlog of over $99 billion.
Similarly, companies like IREN and TeraWulf have received large clients. IREN has a $9.7 billion deal with Microsoft. At the same time,TeraWulf entered a $19 billion deal with Anthropic.
MARA’s entry into the AI data center industry has helped it to perform better at a time when the Bitcoin price has plunged.
After peaking at $126,300 last year, Bitcoin has dropped to $62,000 today, hurting the margins of mining companies. Also, the ongoing AI boom has pushed energy prices higher, which has impacted their margins.
MARA Holdings Faces Some Major Headwinds Ahead
Despite the ongoing performance, MARA Holdings faces some major challenges. That explains why many investors have shorted the stock.
Data shows that the company has a short interest of 102.56 million shares, which is equivalent to 30% of the float. This makes it one of the most shorted companies in the industry, a sign that many investors expect it to drop over time.
MARA and other Bitcoin mining companies entering the industry are facing some major challenges. The most notable one is that the cost of deploying data centers has surged because of the elevated server, GPU, and memory prices. As a result, the company will ultimately need to raise more cash again.
Many companies in the space have used different ways to raise cash, including debt, equity sales, and GPU financing. The equity sales have led to shareholder dilution.
There is also a concern about competition now that companies like SpaceX have moved into the industry. Meta Platforms is also said to be entering the data center industry.
MARA Stock Price Technical Analysis
The daily chart shows that the MARA stock price has come under pressure in the past few days. It then bounced back today after announcing the land acquisition in Texas.

Still, there is a risk that the stock will remain under pressure. For one, it has formed a shooting-star candlestick pattern.
It has also formed a bearish divergence pattern as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has formed a series of lower lows and lower highs. Therefore, the stock will likely resume the downtrend, potentially to the key support level at $10.
