What is Bull Market?

A bull market is a sustained period in which asset prices rise broadly across a market, typically driven by positive investor sentiment, economic conditions, or improving fundamentals.

The term bull market originates from the image of a bull thrusting its horns upward — a metaphor for rising prices. In traditional finance, a bull market is often defined as a rise of 20 percent or more from a recent low. In cryptocurrency markets, the term is used more loosely given the much larger typical price swings.

Characteristics commonly associated with a bull market in crypto:

  • Broadly rising prices across major assets over weeks or months
  • Increased trading volume and media coverage
  • Growing retail and institutional participation
  • Expansion of projects, token launches, and DeFi activity
  • Positive feedback loops in which rising prices attract new buyers, which further pushes prices higher

Bull markets can be driven by a range of factors, including macroeconomic conditions such as low interest rates, specific catalysts within the crypto ecosystem (such as Bitcoin halvings or major protocol upgrades), and broader shifts in institutional or retail sentiment.

It is worth noting that bull markets do not move in a straight line. They typically include sharp corrections — sometimes 20–40 percent drops — before the broader upward trend resumes. These corrections within a bull market are sometimes called pullbacks or retracements.

Identifying a bull market with certainty is easier in retrospect than in real time. Analysts use a variety of technical and on-chain indicators to assess whether a market is in a bullish phase, though no indicator reliably predicts future price direction.

Bull markets eventually end and are followed by bear markets; the cycle has repeated across crypto’s short history.
