What is Spot ETF?

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is an investment vehicle that trades on a stock exchange and tracks the value of an underlying asset or basket of assets. A spot ETF specifically holds the physical asset rather than futures contracts or other derivatives.

In the context of cryptocurrency, a Bitcoin spot ETF holds actual bitcoin in custody, with its share price reflecting the real-time market value of that bitcoin. This is distinct from a Bitcoin futures ETF, which holds contracts to buy or sell bitcoin at a future date and can deviate from spot prices due to futures market mechanics such as contango and roll costs.

Key characteristics of a spot crypto ETF:

• Regulated vehicle: ETFs are regulated financial products subject to exchange listing rules and securities law, offering investor protections not present when purchasing crypto directly.
• Brokerage accessibility: Investors can gain price exposure through standard brokerage accounts, IRAs, and other tax-advantaged structures without setting up crypto wallets or dealing with private key management.
• No direct custody: The fund’s custodian holds the underlying crypto; shareholders own ETF units, not the asset directly.
• Fees: ETFs charge an annual management fee (expense ratio), which reduces net returns relative to holding the asset directly.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission approved the first spot Bitcoin ETFs for trading in January 2024. Spot Ethereum ETFs were approved later the same year. These approvals were widely seen as a significant development in the integration of digital assets into mainstream financial infrastructure.
