Chainlink is a decentralised oracle network that connects smart contracts on blockchains to real-world data, APIs, and payment systems. Launched in 2017 by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, it solves the oracle problem — blockchains cannot natively access off-chain information, so Chainlink's node operators retrieve, verify, and deliver external data through cryptographically signed feeds. Its architecture uses multiple independent nodes and data sources to reduce single points of failure, making it the dominant oracle infrastructure across DeFi, insurance, gaming, and enterprise applications.
LINK is the native utility token of the Chainlink network. Node operators stake LINK as collateral to participate in data delivery, aligning their incentives with accurate reporting. Demand for LINK is primarily driven by protocol adoption: as more smart contracts require oracle services, node operators must hold and stake more LINK. Integration depth across Ethereum, Avalanche, Polygon and dozens of other chains, along with the expansion of Chainlink's product suite — including Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) and Proof of Reserve — are the principal factors influencing the token's role and usage.
