CoinGecko’s report revealed an 8,327% uptick in settlement values compared to 2022. US regulators received settlement amounts from forfeiture, disgorgement, civil penalties, settlement, and prejudgment interest.

Since 2019, US regulators have received around $31.92 Billion in settlements from crypto companies.

Major Settlements By The US Regulators

Below, you can check more details about the settlements made by top crypto companies to US Regulators:

  1. FTX and Alameda Research

The now-bankrupt crypto exchange FTX and its affiliated trading firm Alameda Research were responsible for the largest portion of the settlements.

They have paid $12.7 Billion to the CFTC in August 2024. This settlement aimed to address the fallout from FTX’s collapse and to compensate affected customers and creditors.

  1. Terraform Labs

Terraform Labs, the company behind the failed algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (UST), reached a settlement worth $4.47 Billion.

This settlement was made with the SEC regarding the 2022 collapse of UST. This event was a significant trigger for the increased regulatory scrutiny that followed.

  1. Genesis

Genesis is a crypto lending firm that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2023. The crypto company settled with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) for $2 Billion in August 2024.

This settlement was part of the broader efforts to address the financial instability caused by the firm’s collapse.

  1. Celsius Network

Celsius Network, a prominent crypto lending platform, faced significant regulatory challenges following its collapse in mid-2022. In 2024, Celsius settled with U.S. regulators, agreeing to pay $4.7 Million to address the fallout from its bankruptcy.

  1. Binance

Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges globally, faced intense scrutiny from U.S. regulators. In November 2023, Binance and its CEO, Changpeng Zhao, agreed to a landmark settlement involving multiple U.S. regulatory bodies.

The list includes the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Treasury Department, and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

The settlement required Binance to pay a total of $2.85 billion, which included disgorgement of ill-gotten gains and civil monetary penalties.

This settlement was notable as it was the only billion-dollar settlement involving an operating crypto company in 2024.

Regulatory Trends and Implications

The year 2024 has seen a record high in settlements between U.S. regulators and crypto companies.

There is a 78.9% increase in settlement values compared to 2023. This surge in regulatory actions can be attributed to several factors:

  1. The collapse of major crypto firms like FTX and Terraform Labs has prompted regulators to intensify their industry oversight. The aim is to protect investors and maintain market stability.
  1. U.S. regulators have shown no signs of slowing down their scrutiny of the crypto industry. With a few months left, more settlements are expected before the end of 2024.
  2. The stringent regulatory environment in the U.S. may drive crypto innovation abroad, benefiting other regions with more favorable regulatory frameworks.
