Why Is Japan’s Prime Minister Silent On Bitcoin National Reserve?
  • Japan’s PM made a big statement on integrating BTC into the national reserve.
  • Japan considers cryptocurrencies not suitable for foreign exchange.
  • The country is working on a yen-backed stablecoin.

Many countries plan to integrate Bitcoin (BTC) into their national financial strategies. Their governments are in favor of holding BTC in their foreign exchange reserves. However, Japan has no such plan as they are cautious about adding digital assets to their national reserves.

Japan’s Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, recently spoke about a Bitcoin national reserve. He talked of it while replying to a question by Senator Satoshi Hamada on December 20. Japan’s PM has shown reluctance to discuss the possibility of adopting a Bitcoin reserve.

Many crypto experts are shocked after seeing Japan being cautious about holding BTC in foreign exchange reserves. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are legal in Japan and can be used as payment methods.

Japan PM Shigeru Ishiba On Bitcoin National Reserve

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba recently responded to a proposal made by Councilor Satoshi Hamada. The proposal was regarding the possibility of adding Bitcoin to their foreign exchange reserves.

Ishiba has clarified that cryptocurrencies are not foreign exchange assets according to Japanese law. These crypto-assets do not come under their foreign exchange framework.

Also, Japan does not have enough information about the Bitcoin national reserve like other nations. Ishiba added that the government focuses on stability and liquidity when it comes to managing foreign exchange reserves.

Bitcoin is already a volatile asset as its price fluctuates quickly. So, it can create an issue that causes problems for the reserve systems. The Japanese government wants to have stability in its foreign exchange reserves.

Japan PM Ishiba shared these remarks amid the rising global discussions on BTC reserves. The US, too, is considering a Bitcoin national reserve. Their government thinks that this crypto can be a better way to hedge against economic risks and diversify assets.

Japan’s Crypto Approach

Japan has a progressive approach toward cryptocurrencies. This country has already become a leader in regulating crypto assets.

Japan was one of the first nations to recognize cryptocurrency as an asset. Their government has recognized Bitcoin as a legal payment under the Payment Services Act (PSA). Also, the Japanese government has formulated a clear and strict crypto framework for user protection.

Their approach stems from its longtime technological innovation. The country has integrated blockchain technology into different sectors. These different sectors are supply chain management, data management, and government services.

Every crypto exchange needs to obtain a license from the Financial Services Agency (FSA). This agency regulates the crypto industry in Japan. With the effect of this organization, crypto exchanges prioritize consumer protection through fund segregation and transparent fee structures.

The Japanese government has already taken steps to regulate stablecoins. Here, stablecoin issuers need to obtain licenses and ensure the stability of their tokens.

Recently, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse revealed that Japan is working on creating a yen-backed stablecoin. Garlinghouse has emphasized that Japan’s regulatory clarity makes it an attractive market for stablecoin innovation.
