The cryptocurrency market has finally gained recognition in the traditional finance sector. It was recently listed on one of the largest U.S. indexes, the S&P 500.
This development aligns with the U.S. effort to pass the market structure bill. The legislation aims to streamline the adoption of cryptocurrencies and expand market exposure.
The launch denoted the tracking of the top 50 cryptos by market capitalization. While this remains a significant milestone in crypto adoption, it’s likely to have a positive impact on the associated cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin (BTC) and the remaining 49 altcoins were poised to attract significant capital from traditional investors. But why was this so?
S&P 500 Launches the Digital Markets 50 Index, Featuring the Top 50 Cryptocurrencies
The launch would increase the capital inflow by bringing transparency to this asset class. According to The Bitcoin Historian on X, the index tracks the performance of the top 50 coins in capitalization.
The S&P 500 Cryptocurrency Index would be referred to as the Digital Markets 50 Index. The analyst noted that Bitcoin could be the next asset to be added to the index independently. The action increases mainstream adoption of this asset class.
The list of included cryptocurrencies featured significant assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL). Others in the group were Cardano (ADA), Chainlink (LINK), Aave (AAVE), Polkadot (DOT), and Ripple (XRP).
The cap-weighted methodology and quarterly rebalancing would minimize the noise from the illiquid assets, helping it remain relevant. The quarterly rebalancing will be a key feature to watch, as it will influence the capital rotation.
The index could attract inflows from ETFs and traditional finance. This is especially likely as many altcoins await SEC approval.

The cryptos that make up the index would see an increase in trading volumes and price discoveries. With that in mind, it would be worthwhile to explore how BTC and altcoins are expected to perform after this launch.
How Will Bitcoin React as Miners Ride the AI Wave?
Bitcoin became stronger as it made a new ATH of $126,000 a day ago. However, it still holds above the $120K level. The “Digital Gold” is expected to maintain its long-term trajectory, as this was a sign that it was here to stay.
Additionally, institutions became more confident in BTC and the broader crypto assets. Miners capitalized on the AI wave, which met with widespread adoption.
Data from CryptoQuant showed that publicly listed Bitcoin mining companies saw impressive returns from leveraging AI infrastructure strategies.

However, they maintained BTC production as the main activity. Iren, Cipher, and Terawulf led with 382%, 204%, and 118% returns on a year-to-date (YTD) period. The returns matched the strength seen in the price of Bitcoin, but will altcoins replicate similar gains?
Altcoin Season Hopes Rise as S&P 500 Crypto Index Gains Traction
Since the S&P 500 cryptocurrency index will also include altcoins, the move could revive the Altseason. The altcoin season index reading was at 67, indicating a cooling off from previous levels above 80.
Top-capped altcoins like ETH and Binance Coin (BNB) have hit a new peak of $1,300. This could signal the beginning of another altcoin season. However, the index needed to rise above 75 again to confirm an Altseason.

In the meantime, the S&P 500 crypto index would bring more transparency. This would attract more capital into the markets. As a result, Bitcoin and other constituent cryptos could rally as mainstream adoption surges.
