Layer 1 blockchain Kadena announced that it will cease operations and halt all business activities. It will also discontinue active maintenance of the blockchain.
The organization shut down due to unfavorable market conditions. It emphasized that the decentralized network will continue to run.
Independent miners and validators will continue to operate the system. KDA crashed 60% in 24 hours to $0.088 following the announcement.
Kadena Organization Shuts Down Operations Citing Market Conditions
Kadena announced the organization is “no longer able to continue business operations and will be ceasing all business activity and active maintenance of the Kadena blockchain immediately.”
The public announcement expressed regret that market conditions prevented continued promotion and support of the decentralized offering. The organization notified staff of the cessation and retained a small team for handling the transition and wind-down period.

The shutdown affects the Kadena company rather than the underlying blockchain protocol. The announcement clarified “the Kadena blockchain is not owned or operated by the company.”
Independent miners operate the decentralized proof-of-work blockchain, which utilizes smart contracts to facilitate transactions. On the other hand, on-chain smart contracts and protocols are governed independently by their respective maintainers.
For operational continuity, Kadena will shortly provide a new binary, ensuring uninterrupted operation without requiring company involvement.
The organization is encouraging all node operators to upgrade as soon as possible. The transition aims to shift network maintenance entirely to the decentralized community of miners and validators.
The company showed interest in working with the Kadena community. It aims to support the shift toward community governance and ongoing maintenance. The announcement thanked team members, community participants, and partners who participated in the journey.
Kadena Price Crashes 60% Following Shutdown Announcement
KDA fell to $0.088 following the announcement of the Kadena shutdown. The token traded in a range of $0.08481 to $0.2215 during the single-day crash.
The collapse extended losses to 66.6% over seven days, with KDA ranging from $0.08585 to $0.2606 during the week.

Longer-term performance shows KDA down 75.3% over 30 days. The one-year drop reaches 85.7%. KDA trades 99.7% below its all-time high of $27.64 reached on November 11, 2021, nearly four years ago. The single-day 60% decline is one of the largest among major Layer 1 protocols.
566 Million KDA Mining Rewards Continue Through 2139
The Kadena announcement emphasized that “over 566 million KDA remain to be distributed as mining rewards, continuing until 2139.” Platform emission has 83.7 million KDA scheduled to come out of lockup until November 2029.
The platform share constitutes 20% of total token emissions. It was extended to a 10-year release cycle in the 2021 tokenomics update. The emission rate was reduced not to exceed mining emissions, thereby extending the timeline for deploying platform tokens.
The 2021 tokenomics update changed the emission schedule from the original five-year plan after launch. The community-driven change addressed concerns about excessive platform emissions relative to mining rewards.
The original tokenomics model allocated 9% of tokens over the first two years. Contributors received 3%, while investors and strategic collaborators got 6%.
These emissions were completed in October 2022. An additional 1% was burned at launch. After November 2029, all KDA emissions will be allocated solely for mining purposes.
Decentralized Network Structure Allows Continued Operation
The Kadena blockchain can continue to function independently of the organization’s shutdown due to its decentralized architecture.
Independent miners operating proof-of-work nodes maintain network security and facilitate transaction processing. Smart contracts and protocols deployed on-chain are governed independently by their maintainers rather than requiring company oversight.
The new binary that Kadena will provide ensures node operators can continue running infrastructure without company involvement.
The software update removes dependencies on company-maintained systems. Node operators upgrading to the new binary maintain network continuity during the transition period.
