IBIT Buys 4,931 BTC as Bitcoin Nears $111K in ETF Frenzy

Key Insights:

  • IBIT bought 4,931 BTC—10x more than daily mined supply.
  • Bitcoin ETFs pulled $607.1M as BTC neared $111K.
  • IBIT saw highest volume since Jan. at $6 billion.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) led a renewed spot Bitcoin ETF buying spree on May 21, injecting $530.6 million into the market in its strongest single-day inflow since May 5.

The surge came as Bitcoin (BTC) climbed above $110,000, triggering a spike in investor demand and ETF allocations. IBIT acquired 4,931 BTC in a day—more than 10 times the 450 BTC mined globally in the same period.

Total net inflows across all 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs reached $607.1 million, with Fidelity’s FBTC trailing IBIT at $23.5 million, according to data from Farside Investors.

Bitcoin ETF Inflows Surge on Price Breakout

IBIT’s inflow on May 21 marked its largest since recording $531.2 million on May 5. It hasn’t seen a single outflow since April 9.

The demand followed Bitcoin’s rally past the $110,000 level on Coinbase, with the price touching $111,897 in early trading on May 22, per TradingView data. Bitcoin has now added over 48% since its March 2024 lows of $74,500.

Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas described the wave of inflows as a “classic feeding frenzy,” comparing current ETF trade volumes to those seen in Jan. 2024—around BTC’s earlier all-time highs.

ETF Store president Nate Geraci echoed the sentiment, noting that IBIT had recorded inflows in 26 of the past 27 days. “Over $500 million into iShares Bitcoin ETF… nearly $2 billion just over the past week or so,” Geraci said in a May 22 post on X. “Given trading volume today, expect these inflow numbers to increase.”

Volume Spikes to Highest Since January

IBIT also saw $6 billion in trading volume on May 21—its largest single-day volume since Jan. 23, according to ETF data analyst Trader T. The previous day, May 20, IBIT logged $287.2 million in net flows and $3 billion in volume.

The May 21 inflows placed IBIT well above its historical average of $136.9 million per day. The second-highest ETF inflow for the day, FBTC, stood at $23.5 million. Other ETFs, including BITB, HODL, and EZBC, posted minimal or flat flows.

IBIT’s rapid accumulation of 4,931 BTC in one day puts its buying rate far beyond current network production. The mining output remains capped at 450 BTC per day post-April halving, underscoring the imbalance between new supply and ETF demand.

The overall realized cap and market cap of Bitcoin also hit new highs at $911.5 billion and $2.17 trillion respectively, according to Glassnode data.

Institutions Crowding In Amid Supply Crunch

Jeff Mei, chief operating officer at BTSE, attributed the ETF rush to institutional capital reallocation. “Investors are crowding into Bitcoin ETFs,” he said in a statement, pointing to $3.6 billion in May net flows.

Mei believes capital rotation will continue, especially if macro conditions shift. “This could even accelerate if the Fed decides to cut interest rates in the coming months,” he noted.

HashKey Capital partner Jupiter Zheng said Bitcoin’s move above $110,000 puts it in “uncharted price discovery territory,” driven by geopolitical and macroeconomic instability that is forcing long-term capital into digital assets.

Data from Farside shows that, as of May 21, cumulative net flows into Bitcoin ETFs totaled $43.35 billion, led by IBIT’s $11.84 billion and FBTC’s $2.06 billion.

ETF Flows Fuel Bullish Narrative

Bitcoin’s 2025 rally has mirrored its ETF-driven breakout seen earlier in the year. The current uptrend marks seven consecutive weekly green candles for BTC—its longest such streak since Oct. 2023.

The spot ETF segment, long viewed as a gateway for institutional exposure to Bitcoin, now appears to be the driving force behind sustained bullish momentum.

With IBIT buying over 10 times the daily mined BTC, scarcity may continue to push prices higher—unless inflows slow or macro headwinds hit demand.

The next weekly close above $106,500 would further reinforce bullish sentiment, validating Bitcoin’s breakout from its March-April consolidation phase.
