Bitcoin Payments Goes Live on Square, Threatens Visa and Mastercard

Key Insights:

  • Block, Inc. rolled out Bitcoin payments on Square, unlocking BTC access for over 4M merchants.
  • Payments will run through the Lightning Network, starting with a simple QR scan.
  • Merchants can choose to HODL the Bitcoin, or auto-convert it to fiat in real-time.
  • Senator Cynthia Lummis wants the government to not interfere with Bitcoin’s advancements.

The world is undergoing a shift in global payments with cryptocurrencies assuming a potential lead in the recent past due to their borderless, fast and reduced fees.

This has prompted the idea that Bitcoin payments were on the verge of toppling credit card payments like Visa and Mastercard. This meant a threat and here is how;

Bitcoin Payments on Square Through Lightning Network

This summer, Block, Inc. will allow 4 million Square merchants to start accepting Bitcoin.

Merchants using Square from the second half of 2025 will be able to process Bitcoin payments on the Lightning Network by scanning a QR code.

The complete rollout is anticipated in 2026. With Lightning Network, users can often send Bitcoin almost instantly and for less than one cent.

Merchants can save and customers can enjoy a quicker and more secure way to make payments.

The choice is given to merchants: they are able to hold their Bitcoin or change it into local cash, helping protect against price fluctuations.

The aim behind the rollout is to help bring Bitcoin into people’s lives for more than just speculating.

Making payments with Bitcoin through Square is becoming easier, less expensive and safer, with Block working to make it more popular in stores.

How BTC and its Alternatives Are Threatening Visa and Mastercard

With Bitcoin’s Lightning Network bringing about a change in payments, it allows people to spend next to nothing compared to the fees charged by credit cards.

This was much better than the 2–3% needed to pay for credit cards. Such minimal interest was already cutting into Visa and Mastercard’s share of the merchants’ services.

With Bitcoin payments supported on Square, over 4 million vendors can now receive and quickly handle Bitcoin through their accounts.

At the same time, USDC stablecoins have started operating on Lightning, making it easy to transfer money across borders very quickly.

X, formerly Twitter, is also testing Dogecoin. That way, it would expected a fast rise in the use of crypto rails as cheaper and quicker options for digital payments.

With these methods, there is no need for banks, so delays would be cut down and both buyers and sellers gain more control.

At its core, Bitcoin benefits from the Lightning Network’s anonymity and quick, inexpensive payments.

Remittances across borders can be more stable with stablecoins being added into the pool.

Still, fluctuating prices for Bitcoin and the lack of clear Bitcoin rules create obstacles for players.

Besides, trusting the people who issue them is still necessary for stablecoins.

Although it has made progress, using cryptocurrencies is not yet completely smooth for most people.

Senator Cynthia Lummis to Government

Again, Senator Lummis wants Bitcoin and artificial intelligence, along with other exciting innovations, to be allowed to develop freely.

In a recent address, she urged that “This is the place where this innovation will occur,” referencing the transformative potential of Bitcoin payments, it’s Lightning Network and its applications.

Lummis emphasized the parallel growth of AI and Bitcoin, quoting her view that “Here was the internet… Here’s Bitcoin… Here’s AI, I mean, we’re moving into avenues that are just, we can’t even, conceive of today.”

She continued, “But we have to enable the people in this room to take us there. And if the government gets in the way, you’ll find greener pastures.” This highlighted the massive technological shifts underway.

She cautioned that too much government regulation could slow down progress and said, “Should the government limit your options, you may find it easier elsewhere.”

Her comments were especially important as more people used Bitcoin payments. Thanks to the speed and low cost of transactions, Bitcoin is threatening traditional credit card companies.

Lummis felt that championing policies supportive of innovation can allow the U.S. to lead this process.

She noted, “We can only get there if the people in this room are allowed to grow, not held back,” she said, referring to growth and not restrictions.
