Retail traders are torn on Bitcoin’s next move as the crypto market stalls. Meanwhile, whales accumulate BTC amid rising geopolitical tensions and ETF inflows continue.
Institutional demand climbs despite Israel-Iran conflict jitters
Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the U.S. recorded $388.3 million in net inflows on June 18, marking the eighth consecutive day of capital entering the sector. The figures come amid market unease triggered by renewed tensions between Israel and Iran.
BlackRock and Fidelity led the day’s inflow activity. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) pulled in $278.9 million, while the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) added $104.4 million, according to data from Farside Investors.
Bitcoin’s price held steady near $105,000, defying broader risk-off sentiment sparked by fears of escalation in the Middle East. At the time of writing, BTC traded at $105,119, showing little reaction to geopolitical headlines.
Bitcoin shows resilience as volatility fails to materialize
Santiment said in a June 18 post on X that Bitcoin has weathered similar macro events in the past. “Despite the initial panic, Bitcoin has remained in the $104K–$105K range,” the analytics firm noted, comparing the move to earlier price responses during the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Oct. 2023 Israel-Palestine war.

In both prior events, Bitcoin saw short-term dips of 7% or more, but stabilized within days. The current pattern, Santiment added, mirrors that behavior—highlighting “risk-off, then stabilize” dynamics typical of the asset in conflict-driven environments.

That view appears to align with market sentiment. “I find BTC extremely bullish in structure atm,” posted trader Friedrich (@FriedrichBtc), adding that a close above $106,000 could open a path to the $120,000–$140,000 range. He suggested many traders remain fixated on past levels like $87,000–$93,000 while market makers front-run broader sentiment shifts.
Whales Accumulate While Retail Exits
Despite subdued retail sentiment, Bitcoin whale wallets are quietly accumulating. Santiment reported that 231 new wallets holding more than 10 BTC have emerged in the past ten days. In contrast, over 37,000 wallets with smaller holdings have sold their positions.
“When large wallets accumulate as retail loses confidence, this is historically the right combination for bullish momentum,” Quinlivan said.
This divergence in behavior between large and small holders reflects a growing confidence among long-term investors despite price stagnation. Bitcoin remains up 3.5% over the past 14 days, according to CoinGecko.
Ethereum shows a similar trend. Large ETH wallets have expanded their holdings over the past month, while smaller holders continue to exit. Earlier this month, Bitget COO Vugar Usi Zade said retail traders are moving toward “more practical and sustainable use cases.”
ETF Inflows Defy Market Apathy
While spot prices have stalled, U.S.-based Bitcoin exchange-traded funds continue to draw inflows. According to data from Farside Investors, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $388.3 million in fresh capital on Wednesday, marking the eighth straight day of positive flows.
This steady inflow reflects continued institutional interest in Bitcoin as a long-term asset, even as short-term sentiment remains muted.
Meanwhile, long-term cycle watchers remain optimistic. Analyst Ether Wizz noted on X that Bitcoin’s monthly Relative Strength Index (RSI) still shows room for one final leg up before a market top, possibly in Q4.

“BTC top hasn’t happened yet,” they wrote. “There’s one leg up before the top formation.”
Others remain skeptical. While MicroStrategy’s Saylor dismissed any future bear market for Bitcoin, trader Rekt Capital disagreed, warning that a new downtrend is “very likely” after the current bull market.
Retail Skepticism May Mark Cycle Turning Point
Historically, major Bitcoin rallies have followed periods of deep retail doubt. On-chain sentiment indicators and whale accumulation trends suggest the current stall may be temporary.
As Hyland’s poll indicates, the market is still unsure whether BTC will break above $114,000 or tumble toward $94,000. With institutional flows continuing and whales quietly adding to their stacks, retail skepticism could again serve as a contrarian indicator.
But for now, Bitcoin’s sideways movement continues to test the patience of both bulls and bears.
