US Money Market Funds Attract Almost $1T Inflows

Key Insights:

  • US money market funds attracted $902 billion in net inflows over the past year where in 2025 alone, MMFs inflows reached $200 billion.
  • Impact on this liquidity flowing into risk-on assets.
  • Long-term research indicated the US-10 year has traded at CPI plus 175 with inflation at 2.5% which puts this 10-year at 4.25%.

The massive capital outflow into the money market funds (MMFs) was an indication of investor apprehensiveness toward risk-on assets like Bitcoin.

A look into the cumulative trailing 12-month US mutual fund and ETF flows, liquidity on risk-on assets and the US 10-Year CPI and inflation rates could offer insights on nature of the markets.

US Money Market Funds Capital Inflow

During the quarters that had passed, money market funds were taken up with an addition of$ 902 billion- which exceeded that of both bond at $ 485B and equity at $ 443B.

This unfold elevated extensively in 2025, as about $200 billion of fund flows had been directed toward cash market. However flows remained largely constant within the case of bonds and equity finances.

This was affirmed with money market funds flows picking up pace with respect to mid-2024 and leading all the other asset classes by May 2025.

The bonds and equities, whose performance was close until the start of 2025, flattened. The shift to cash-like products was indicative of risk-aversion.

The increase in the yield environment and the volatility in the equity movement with a risk to devaluation of bonds contributed to the flight to safety making holding cash more attractive.

In case these macro trends prevailed, the continuous dominance of the money markets in the direction of funds may be experienced even in 2025.

Impact of The Liquidity on Risk-on Assets

This rise in into money MMFs inflows reflected a strong change of investor behavior as capital sought liquidity and short term yield gains in the face of macro uncertainty.

Even though this movement implied a risk-off attitude, it was not an outright fear trade, it was a strategic move.

Money markets seem flexible because of daily liquidity and yields without exposure to wobbly equities or needing interest rates to head in the right direction.

Nonetheless, this flow toward town is immediate and direct on risk-on investments. Reduced inflows to equities and bonds may hinder gains or slowdowns of gains.

But in case of stabilization of macro conditions or a Fed flip, this sidelined cash might drive a sharp rebalance into risk assets and apply upside pressure.

On the other hand, long-term high rates and unclarity of economic issues may lock up capital in safety trades, leaving the risk economies downtrodden.

The liquidity rotation, in turn, transforms not only being a hedge, but also a strategic pause. This capital could either redeploy or be parked which would determine the market direction in the months ahead.

U.S. 10-Year Yield at 4.25% Hinders Bitcoin Reserve Growth

Long-term yield benchmarks also add pressure on alternative assets like Bitcoin. According to fixed-income veteran Bill Gross, the U.S. 10-year Treasury has historically traded at CPI + 1.75%.

With inflation near 2.5%, that places the implied fair yield at 4.25%. Current real yields have turned decisively positive, raising the bar for non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.

High real rates increase borrowing costs and constrain risk-on assets. Despite continued U.S. deficit spending, demand for Treasurys remained solid, preventing CPI from dropping sharply.

This environment strains fiscal policy and could weigh on equity and crypto markets alike. While tech stocks may benefit from AI tailwinds, Bitcoin could face challenges unless macro conditions soften.

Still, Bitcoin reserves might retain appeal as a hedge. Fiscal instability, debt monetization, and geopolitical risk sustain the case for decentralized stores of value.

The market now walks a tightrope between cash dominance and risk resurgence. How and when liquidity rotates will decide whether Bitcoin reserves grow—or retreat.
