Key Insights:
- The recent boost in Ethereum transaction activity comes along with increased usage of USDC, Tether, and Uniswap.
- The surge in activity has boosted DeFi sentiment, with total value locked reaching $137 billion, 59% of which is on Ethereum.
- Bitmine’s chief Tom Lee predicts ETH could reach $16,000, citing favorable ETH/BTC ratio trends and the long-term macro outlook.
The Ethereum blockchain network has seen a major surge in daily transactions, reaching a massive 1.87 million on August 6. This strong network activity comes as institutional interest remains strong, again driving ETH price past $3,600. On the other hand, Bitmine Technologies chief Tom Lee believes that ETH is poised for a rally to $16,000.
Ethereum Transactions Reach Close to All-Time Highs
As per the data from Etherscan, the Ethereum blockchain processed 1.87 million transactions on Tuesday, approaching its all-time high of 1.96 million set in January 2024. Analytics platform Nansen attributes the surge to increased on-chain activity from USDC, Tether, and Uniswap. Furthermore, DappRadar added that recent ETF approvals and optimism around the GENIUS Act have contributed to renewed market confidence and elevated blockchain usage.

This surge in Ethereum transactions is a positive signal for decentralized finance (DeFi), enabling on-chain transactions. DeFi Llama says total value locked (TVL) across DeFi platforms has reached $137 billion. Interestingly, the Ethereum-based protocols alone contribute to 59% of the total.
Furthermore, the passing of the GENIUS Act last month, led to a strong bump in stablecoin transactions. Some of the top crypto firms are moving to launch their stablecoins, with Ethereum offering the infrastructure support.
Tom Lee Predicts ETH Price to $16,000
Tom Lee, spearheading the ETH treasury strategy for Bitmine Technologies, believes that ETH price could rally to $16,000. His latest comments came during a CNBC interview, as Bitmine Technologies takes its ETH holdings to 833K coins. This makes Bitmine the largest ETH treasury firm, with staggering $3.10 billion holdings.
“Ethereum is arguably the biggest macro trade over the next 10-15 years as Wall Street runs onto the blockchain and as AI drives adoption of token economics – the largest layer 1 is ethereum,” said Lee.
As a premise of his ETH price prediction to $16,000, Lee pointed out Sean Farrell’s presentation and the ETH/BTC ratio of 2017, which peaked at 0.14. During the last bull run of 2021, the ETH/BTC ratio peaked at 0.08. Now, considering the 0.14 ratio of 2017, and the current BTC price of $114,000, a return to the 2017 ratio could mean ETH moving to $16,000.
Bitmine and SharpLink have resolved to heavy ETH accumulation over the past few weeks, to become the largest ETH treasury firm. The treasury holdings have now crossed 3 million ETH this week, worth more than $11 billion. In the last 30 days, Bitmine has seen more than 410% surge in ETH holdings, while SharpLink Gaming has seen 150% surge.
Amid the strong ETH whale accumulation, ETH price rallies could continue. However, $4,000 remains a major resistance for bulls to break. Bulls have been trying to break past this resistance since March 2024, but have been unsuccessful. A Fed rate cut anticipated in September this year could serve as a major catalyst for the same.

Ethereum ETF Inflows Resume Again
Along with the institutional race among ETH treasury firms over the past week, inflows into spot Ether ETFs have resumed after last week’s major outflows. Although the net inflows remain under $100 million, it highlights a shift in the overall market sentiment.

BlackRock iShares Ether Trust (ETHA) is once again showing strength. On August 6, the ETHA share price surged 3.29%, exceeding $27.91. Since the April lows, the stock has gained 150% gains.
In the last two months, ETH treasury firms have closed the gap with Ether ETFs, in terms of ETH accumulation. Ethereum treasury firms and spot ETH ETFs have acquired roughly 1.6% of the current total ETH supply since the beginning of June.
