Ethereum Staking Queue Surges to $3.7B, Highest Since 2023

Ethereum Staking Queue Surges to $3.7B, Highest Since 2023

Key Insights:

  • Ethereum staking entry queue surged to $3.7B, highest since 2023.
  • Institutional accumulation boosted validator demand as exit queue showed sharp decline.
  • Over 860,000 ETH now await staking, signaling strong long-term network confidence.

Ethereum’s validator entry queue hit a two-year high this week, with more than 860,000 Ether (ETH) worth roughly $3.7 billion waiting to be staked. The surge highlighted renewed institutional demand and rising confidence in the network, even as Ether’s price retreated from its August all-time high.

Staking Demand Climbs as Institutions Step In

On Sept. 2, onchain data showed Ethereum’s entry queue reached its highest level since the Shanghai upgrade in 2023. Everstake, a staking protocol, flagged the milestone, noting parallels with the period following Shanghai’s withdrawal enablement.

“Honestly, this is pretty striking, because we haven’t seen queues of this size since 2023,” Everstake wrote. The firm linked the increase to improved market conditions, stronger confidence in Ethereum, and heightened institutional activity.

The Book of Ethereum, an onchain analytics account, echoed that view, describing the $3.7 billion in pending ETH as a signal, not a bottleneck. “Confidence is growing, institutions are entering, and demand to secure the network has never been stronger,” the account posted on X.

Corporate treasury funds also increased their ETH exposure. Data from StrategicEtherReserve showed that 4.7 million ETH, worth about $20.4 billion, had been purchased by more than 70 entities. Most of these holdings were being staked, directly feeding into the entry queue.

Exit Queue Declines After August Peak

The surge in the entry queue contrasted with a cooling exit queue. Concerns had risen in late August after Ethereum’s exit queue surpassed 1 million ETH, sparking fears of a large-scale sell-off.

By early September, however, the exit queue dropped 20%, suggesting that many validators had chosen to remain locked into staking. The near-parity between entry and exit queues marked the closest balance since July, calming some market anxieties.

Ultrasound.Money data showed that 35.7 million ETH, worth approximately $162 billion, was already staked. This represented about 31% of Ethereum’s total supply.

Market Conditions Drive Renewed Interest

Everstake pointed to favorable conditions underpinning the surge. Rising Ether prices and lower gas fees made staking more attractive and accessible for investors. At the time of writing, ETH traded at $4,321, down 1.2% on the day and 12.4% below its Aug. 24 record high.

Despite the correction, analysts and staking providers interpreted the activity as a bullish indicator. Johnc.eth, an Ethereum community member, noted that the average staked balance had risen above 33 ETH, slightly higher than the 32 ETH threshold required to become a validator.

The institutional dimension further underlined the shift. Everstake observed that “more companies and funds are entering Ethereum staking, bringing larger amounts into the chain.” This reinforced the narrative that the validator queue reflected confidence, not congestion.

Historical Echoes and Market Takeaways

Observers compared September 2021, when Ethereum experienced a temporary decline before rallying into new highs. Traders speculated that September could deliver a similar setup, with an initial correction followed by recovery momentum.

Ethereum’s total staked volume and the treasury inflows painted a picture of sustained demand. The 860,000 ETH in line for staking underscored the willingness of both retail and institutional players to commit to the network’s long-term yield model.

The Book of Ethereum summed it up in a thread: “The validator entry queue isn’t a bottleneck, it’s a signal.”

While profit-taking by retail traders weighed on price in late August, institutional buying appeared to offset those flows. That dynamic highlighted the shifting balance of power in Ethereum markets, where larger entities increasingly shaped staking activity.

Ethereum Price Holds Despite Sell Pressure

ETH’s retreat from $4,900 to $4,321 showed the market was still digesting gains from August’s peak. The 12.4% drawdown remained modest compared to historical corrections, which often reached 20% or more.

For stakers, the correction coincided with favorable entry conditions. Low gas fees reduced participation costs, while staking yields continued to attract treasuries and funds.

With 860,000 ETH now awaiting entry, Ethereum’s validator system showed the clearest sign in two years of renewed demand. Institutional inflows, treasury strategies, and lower exit activity collectively reinforced the case that the network was securing broader, long-term participation.
