Is The Robinhood Stock Price At Risk As Valuation Concerns Linger?

Robinhood stock price surged to a record high this week following its inclusion in the blue-chip S&P 500 Index. This will push all ETFs and mutual funds tracking it to buy it.

HOOD stock topped at $122 and then pulled back to $117. This article explores whether it has more upside as valuation concerns remain.

Robinhood Stock Price Has Benefited From Its Fast Growth and Innovation

Robinhood has been one of the best performers on Wall Street as it jumped by over 460% in the last 12 months. It’s a company that disrupted the brokerage industry,

The surge happened as the company continued growing its revenues, profitability, user numbers, and geographic locations. Robinhood’s annual revenues have jumped from $958 million in 2019 to over $2.9 billion in 2024. It continued to gain market share in the industry.

This revenue growth accelerated in the second quarter, expanding by 45% to $989 million. The growth was attributed to higher trading volume in the cryptocurrency and options industries and higher interest rates. This boosted its net interest margin.

Analysts are optimistic that this growth trajectory will continue, thanks to its innovation and the recent Bitstamp acquisition. The average estimate among Wall Street analysts is that its annual revenue will be $1.1 billion. It is up by 74% from the previous year.

Another potential catalyst for the Robinhood stock is the upcoming launch of a layer-2 blockchain network. This will be similar to Coinbase’s Base Blockchain. A layer-2 network will allow developers to build applications and handle transactions.

Layer-2 networks don’t generate a lot of money for their developers. The real value, however, comes when the network launches its token. For example, while Arbitrum generates minimal revenue, its tokens are valued at over $2 billion.

Robinhood is also working on a social media platform for the trading industry. This could disrupt existing names like StockTwits and even Reddit. Its goal is to make it a super app where users can discuss the markets, send money, and trade.

Valuation Concerns Remain

HOOD stock price has become one of the most overvalued companies in the financial and technology industries. This has been a matter of concern for investors for a long time.

Data shows that the company trades at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 72. It’s much higher than the sector median of 12. The multiple is also much higher than the technology sector average of 33.

HOOD’s non-GAAP PE ratio is 62, which is also higher than that of most companies in the industry. Most importantly, the company has a PEG ratio of 2.36 when factoring in growth. This is substantially higher than other companies.

This hefty valuation means that the company is priced for perfection. This implies that it needs to beat on its revenue and profits constantly.

The other risk is that the Robinhood stock could crash after the S&P 500 inclusion. This may occur as investors wait for the next catalyst. It’s common for companies that are upgraded to these indices to rise initially and then pull back as investors sell the news.

Robinhood Stock Price Technical Analysis

HOOD stock price broke past the key resistance level of $117.78 following its inclusion in the S&P 500. The move reflects strong bullish momentum and increased institutional interest. This gain was short-lived as the stock then pulled back to $117.

On the positive side, the Robinhood stock price remains above the 50-day and 100-day EMAs. It also remains below the strong pivot reverse level of the Murrey Math Lines tool at $125.

HOOD is trading at an overvalued level. Despite this, bullish momentum could push the stock higher. Traders are eyeing an aggressive upside target of $175. That price is roughly 51% above its current level, signaling strong speculative interest.

The bullish case weakens if the HOOD stock falls below the $100 pivot level. This breach would signal a potential trend reversal. Further downsides could follow as investor sentiment shifts to be bearish.
