Mike Selig, the new head of the CFTC, has announced a Future-Proof initiative for the crypto sector. He disclosed this in a recent opinion post published in the Washington Post. He also noted that America’s financial markets are ready for their golden age.

Selig praised President Trump’s leadership on crypto. He highlighted the crypto market structure bill. He said it will provide much-needed clarity for the industry. He described the industry as embodying “the promise of the future.”
CFTC To Play Leading Role in Regulating Crypto Through Future-Proof Initiative
According to Selig, CFTC will play an important role in developing the rules for the crypto industry. He described the sector as the new frontier of finance. He noted how technological innovation has enabled 24/7 access to the financial markets.
Selig criticized the previous administration for relying on enforcement-based regulation. He said the CFTC, under his leadership, will adopt a new approach. Also, he emphasized shifting toward a different regulatory framework.
He plans to future-proof the agency to address these technological innovations. This is why he decided to launch the “Future-Proof” initiative.
Under this initiative, the CFTC will review all its existing rules and regulations with a focus on modernizing them. He noted that this is necessary to unleash technological innovation. That’s because the current rules are decades old and better suited to agricultural futures contracts.
He wrote:
“As new asset classes emerge and the CFTC’s role evolves, guidelines we establish should not just fit the product, but also serve a tailored regulatory purpose.”
Meanwhile, the new CFTC Chair added that the regulator is ready to act on the CLARITY Act once it becomes law.
He noted that, if passed, the law would add to the CFTC’s responsibilities. Furthermore, the agency is ready to deliver a suitable regulatory framework that can stand the test of time.
New Regulatory Approach Will Extend to Predictions Market
Interestingly, the crypto sector is not the only one Selig wants to modernize. The CFTC Chair also briefly mentioned the prediction market. He noted that it has exploded in popularity and attracted substantial participants.
The mention suggests that the regulator also wants to change its approach to prediction markets compared to the previous administration. Under former CFTC Chair Rostin Benham, the regulator had pushed back against prediction markets focused on elections.
However, the regulator has already signaled a different approach since Trump became president. Not only has it approved several firms to launch a prediction platform. However, it has also allowed Polymarket to return to the US.
It granted an Amended Order of Designation to Polymarket, enabling the platform to operate as a fully regulated US exchange. This came months after the CFTC closed its investigation into the platform.
