Coinbase CEO Admits Content Coins Failure

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has acknowledged that the company’s content coin venture Zora was a failure that the company has moved on from. Armstrong wrote on X that the company “messed up” with content coins and had shifted its priorities earlier this year.

Zora is an on-chain content platform built on Base that allows creators to tokenize digital content and issue creator-linked assets. Coinbase promoted the platform as part of its broader creator economy strategy.

The user had criticised Coinbase for promoting creator coins despite the reputation of some of these creators. While the promotion generated interest in Zora and content coins, the interest late petered out, leaving several users with losses as the coins fell. Zora token itself fell 95% from its peak, dropping to $0.0066.

According to the user, Coinbase layer-2 network Base spent over a year promoting Zora without gaining any traction, and it has now shifted attention to AI agents.

They noted that while these products might generate some activity, they cannot replace the real community. The core of criticisms appears to be a call on Coinbase to prioritize its users and build its community.

In response, Armstrong admitted that the company “messed up” with the content coins and they did not work out, noting that the exchange had already pivoted on this earlier this year.

Coinbase CEO Says AI Agents Core Part of New Focus

However, Armstrong disagreed with the claim that Base’s recent focus on AI agents is just the team chasing another meta. According to him, Base has been focused on trading, payments, and agents in that order.

He noted that the three are connected, saying, “for instance, to do payments you need FX (trading), agents will do lots of trading and payments as well.”

While he acknowledged that most of the resources are going towards trading at the moment, he emphasized that AI agents remain a key part of Base’s focus, even though it has yet to translate externally.

Coinbase itself has already introduced several AI products for customers, including its recent Coinbase Advisor. The exchange also offers Coinbase for Agents, which allows users to automate payments and trades.

Base Becomes Leading Network in Value Secured

Despite criticisms of Base, the Layer-2 network has emerged as the largest Ethereum L2 in just 2 years since launch. According to L2Beat, Base now has the most value secured of all L2 networks with $11.30 billion, surpassing Arbitrum One, which has $10.51 billion.

It is also among the leading L2S for transactions per second, behind only Lighter exchange, which is a single-use L2 network.

Interestingly, the L2 is also among the top five for DeFi total value locked, with $4.35 billion, coming closely behind Solana and Tron. The network recently completed an upgrade that introduced a new token standard, B20, with the goal of making onboarding businesses onchain easier.
