Strategy, BlackRock Together Launch Bitcoin Security Consortium With $15 Million Backing

Strategy, BlackRock, Coinbase, and six other founding members launched the Bitcoin Security Consortium on July 23. The companies pledged an aggregate of $15 million over three years to support developers, researchers and organizations working on Bitcoin’s long-term security, including post-quantum cryptography.

Strategy Launches Bitcoin Security Consortium

Bitcoin-focused companies and leading financial institutions have together launched the Bitcoin Security Consortium. The goal here is to strengthen the long-term security and resilience of the Bitcoin network. The companies have announced a $15 million combined funding over the next three years.

The founding members are Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and Strategy. Together, they represent asset managers, custodians, exchanges, infrastructure providers, payments firms and corporate Bitcoin holders.

The consortium said it will support developers and researchers working on Bitcoin’s security. It includes efforts to prepare the network for potential challenges posed by quantum computing. Speaking on the development, Michael Saylor wrote:

“Bitcoin’s security is a shared responsibility. Today we are launching the Bitcoin Security Consortium, backed by $15 million in commitments to support the developers and researchers strengthening Bitcoin for the decades ahead”.

Strategy’s Bitcoin Consortium Addresses Quantum Threats

The Bitcoin Security Consortium said it is modeled on industry groups that support the open-source software. Moreover, the consortium said it will not develop or govern Bitcoin’s protocol, take positions on proposed protocol changes, or represent Bitcoin or its developers.

Besides, the network’s development will remain the responsibility of its decentralized global community of contributors. The group also said that large-scale quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography do not currently exist. Also, as per some estimates, such a threat from quantum computing remains years away.

However, it described post-quantum security as a long-term priority. Furthermore, the consortium will support ongoing research while serving as a reference point for investors, the public, and the media as the field evolves.

A Look At Strategy’s MSTR Stock

The MSTR stock has been showing some strength in the past two weeks and reclaimed $100 once again earlier this week. This happened despite the company offloading $235 million worth of shares in the recent announcement.

Furthermore, the company hasn’t announced any fresh Bitcoin purchases for the second consecutive week. Crypto market analyst Master of Crypto said Strategy (MSTR) has paused its Bitcoin accumulation despite the company’s stock climbing back above $100.

The analyst noted that Strategy raised $263.5 million in cash instead of purchasing additional Bitcoin. Moreover, this pause comes after Strategy’s first Bitcoin sale in early July.

Strategy’s latest filing showed no Bitcoin purchases or sales during the week, while ATM share issuance lifted its dollar reserve to $3.225 billion. The move strengthened liquidity for preferred dividends and debt interest but increased the number of outstanding shares. Investors will now watch whether the company resumes Bitcoin purchases or continues prioritizing cash reserves.
