Coinbase Premium Index Hits 12-Month Low – Analysts Weigh In
  • Coinbase Premium Index drops to a 12-month low, signaling US selling pressure.
  • Bitcoin as a Global Asset: Growing institutional and sovereign adoption expected to fuel Bitcoin’s rise.
  • CryptoQuant Analysts warn of short-term Bitcoin challenges, but remain bullish long-term.

The Coinbase Premium Index recently dropped to its lowest point in 12 months. This has sparked discussions about what this means for Bitcoin’s price in the near future.

In their latest Quicktake posts, CryptoQuant analysts provided insights into the significance of these historically low readings. They shed light on their potential impact on the broader market dynamics.

Meanwhile, with Donald Trump scheduled to attend his inauguration on January 20, 2025. Many prominent experts are expressing optimism about the future of Bitcoin and the entire crypto sector.

Continue reading for more insights into these developments and their implications.

Coinbase Premium Index Signals Market Stress, but Optimism for Bitcoin’s Future Remains

The Coinbase Premium Index measures the price difference between Bitcoin on Coinbase Pro and other exchanges, such as Binance. This difference serves as a key measure of US investor demand relative to global markets. Negative readings on the index often suggest increased selling pressure.

On October 25, 2024, just before the US presidential election, the Coinbase Premium index fell to 0.200. However, by December 31, 2024, it had dropped even further to 0.237, marking its lowest level in the past 12 months.

CryptoQuant analyst Burakkesmeci pointed out that this surge in selling pressure among US investors coincided with Bitcoin price decline to $91,500 at year-end. This reflects weak demand from institutional firms and this occurrence creates a tough environment for Bitcoin’s price short-term recovery.

However, Burakkesmeci noted that if institutional or retail investor interest picks up, the current selling pressure could ease. A shift in broader macroeconomic conditions could also alter the dynamics.

Meanwhile, another CryptoQuant analyst, known as MAC_D, acknowledged that the Coinbase Premium Index had indeed reached a 12-month low. However, he emphasized that this doesn’t necessarily signal a continued bearish trend.

He pointed out that in previous instances, when the Coinbase Premium turned negative, Bitcoin’s price often marked the beginning of a bullish phase. This is where major buying pressure enters the market.

Similarly, this suggests that as US investor sentiment turns pessimistic, opportunistic buyers may capitalize on the dip. This will potentially drive Bitcoin’s prices higher.

From a technical perspective, MAC_D noted that $90,000 represents a crucial psychological support level for Bitcoin’s price. Historical data shows that this price point has often been a battleground for bullish and bearish forces, leading to significant price fluctuations.

However, this could create opportunities for stop-loss hunting. Which could potentially offer a strong buying window for investors and traders.

On the downside, MAC_D expects some sideways consolidation in the short term, which could delay further gains. Despite this, the analyst remains bullish in the long run, citing the on-chain and fundamental factors that suggest the current cycle is not over.

For long-term investors, Coinbase Premium index lowest reading may be an ideal time to continue buying and holding. As further upside movement in Bitcoin’s price appears likely once the market stabilizes.

Experts’ Outlook for 2025 Remains Bullish

The CryptoQuant analysts are bullish for the long term, but other experts are optimistic too. In December 2024, Bitwise predicted that institutional interest will grow, which will make Bitcoin ETFs retractable. Also, the firm predicted that it would attract more capital flows in 2025 than in the previous year.

Meanwhile, a report from VanEck highlighted that, as of December 17, 2024, only 68 publicly traded companies held Bitcoin on their balance sheets. However, VanEck anticipates that number will rise to 100 by 2025. It also predicted that a broader trend toward corporate adoption of Bitcoin will increase in 2025.

Moreover, Franklin Templeton also weighed in with a bullish forecast. It projected that Bitcoin will solidify its position as a key global financial asset. The firm expects this shift to be driven by increasing adoption from sovereign nations and institutional investors.

Price wise, institutions are optimistic for Bitcoin. VanEck forecasts Bitcoin price could reach $180,000, while Bitwise expects it to surpass $200,000.

Additionally, Bitwise has proposed a new Bitcoin ETF called the Bitcoin Standard Corporations ETF. This would focus on companies that hold significant Bitcoin reserves in their corporate treasuries, like Microstrategy. This will further fuel institutional demand and market growth.

Key Bitcoin Price Trend to Watch in Coming Weeks

As Bitcoin’s price sets its sights on new all-time highs, there are several key trends to monitor in the coming weeks. One of the most influential factors will be the evolving US political landscape.

The upcoming inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, 2025, sparked expectations that his presidency could have a positive impact on Bitcoin’s price. Under Trump’s leadership, a new team is expected to take charge.

Trump’s new team was introduced in Q4 2024, which includes figures like David Sacks, a crypto and AI czar, and Paul Atkins, a potential SEC chair. They are seen as crypto-friendly figures to assist US crypto ambitions.

Similarly, throughout his election campaign, Trump emphasized his commitment to making the US the world’s “crypto hub” and prioritizing Bitcoin. His administration is likely to introduce policies that could encourage Bitcoin adoption and attract institutional capital into the space.

Trump has even expressed a goal of pushing Bitcoin’s price to $150,000.

Another critical metric to watch is the spot Bitcoin ETF market. Significant inflows or outflows in this sector can provide valuable insights into the broader adoption of Bitcoin by institutional investors and mainstream finance. These movements could be pivotal in determining the next phase of Bitcoin’s growth and its integration into the global financial system.
