Ethereum (ETH) is a smart contract platform cryptocurrency ranked #2 by market capitalisation. Its circulating supply is 122,095,846 ETH, with no fixed maximum. ETH currently trades about 45% below its all-time high of $4,946.05. It launched around 2015-07-30.
Ethereum (ETH) is the largest smart-contract platform, launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and a founding team. Beyond payments, Ethereum lets developers deploy programmable applications — DeFi protocols, stablecoins, NFTs and more — on a global, composable settlement layer.
In 2022 “the Merge” moved Ethereum from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, cutting energy use by roughly 99.9% and introducing staking yields. Activity has increasingly migrated to Layer-2 rollups that inherit Ethereum’s security while lowering fees. ETH’s value reflects its role as the network’s gas token, a yield-bearing staked asset, and the base collateral of the on-chain economy.
