Ethereum Exchange Supply Plunges To 9-Year Low: Rally Incoming?

Key Highlights:

  • Ethereum exchange supply falls to its lowest level in nine years
  • Over 120,000 ETH accumulated by whale wallets within 72 hours
  • ETH maintains crucial $1,970 support ahead of the Q2 open

Ethereum (ETH) price chart displayed some roughness, yet underlying indicators suggest a positive trend. The exchange supply is at its lowest point in nine years while whales strategically increase their positions.

ETH price has maintained its position within a vital support region as Q2 has historically displayed bullish market conditions. This could lead to a full momentum display.

Ethereum Supply Hits 9-Year Low: Is a Surprise Bounce Brewing in Q2?

Ethereum appears to establish conditions that could lead to its return from a harsh first-quarter performance. The token has lost over 45% of its value since January 2025.

However, on-chain signals now suggest a market shift. In particular, the current nine-year low of Ethereum reserves on centralized exchanges shows a bigger market impact.

Major holders have increased their purchases, signaling confidence in the market. The supply of available coins has decreased, creating scarcity. These factors contribute to a positive outlook for ETH price recovery.

The upcoming Q2 period traditionally benefits Ethereum. However, the current market conditions create an intriguing environment.

Exchange Supply Dries Up as Holders Lock-In

As of March 22, the total ETH stored on centralized exchanges fell below 9 million for the first time since 2016. The current exchange supply represents a significant decrease from the 10.6 million coins one year ago.

This reduced number of available coins for sale creates less immediate selling pressure as the coins stay locked up. Why does that matter now? Because the decline in supply did not occur during a single period.

In 2024, Ethereum consistently moved away from exchanges, reflecting shifting investor preferences. This trend persisted even as its price neared $4,000 in December.

Throughout 2025, the supply of Ethereum decreased further. At the same time, its value plummeted instead of increasing alongside the supply.

Lower supply usually drives prices higher due to scarcity. The current price decrease, despite reduced supply, creates a puzzling contradiction.

Despite the limited supply of ETH, the current market sentiment remains negative as the cryptocurrency trades below $2,000. The combination of macroeconomic instability, Bitcoin‘s market control, and general market risk aversion explains the current price situation.

Whales Aren’t Waiting — They’re Buying the Dip

Moreover, Ethereum whales have made aggressive moves while the market conditions continue to worsen. From March 18 to 21, wallets containing between 1 million and 10 million ETH made significant purchases of over 120,000 ETH.

Whales start buying when market conditions indicate long-term value opportunities other investors have yet to recognize. The buying activity of whales combined with minimal exchange supply demonstrates that investors should be aware of this market.

Moreover, ETH price showed minimal reaction to the increased buying activity. Instead, it remained within the $1,910 to $2,078 range before ending near $1,968.

Whale accumulation shows minimal impact on current prices, indicating subtle market activity. This suggests smart money is positioning itself strategically ahead of price adjustments.

How Long Can Ethereum Price Hold Its Support?

ETH’s technical charts highlight crucial support at $1,970. This level was a decisive make-or-break point for the cryptocurrency’s price trends.

According to technical analyst Titan of Crypto, Ethereum successfully protected this price zone during March. The price remains above this zone at $1,989 while bulls intervene to sustain its position.

ETH’s ability to maintain this position until the monthly close could trigger an upward movement toward April. However, a breakdown from this position would encourage traders to inspect support areas between $1,600 and $1,800.

The upcoming Q2 period stands as Ethereum’s most profitable quarter. The token has consistently shown steady growth during the April to June periods. This trend has persisted regardless of performance in the preceding quarter.
