Key Insights
- Metaplanet is now Japan’s most traded and most shorted stock.
- Its Bitcoin treasury strategy mirrors MicroStrategy’s approach.
- High volatility and liquidity are drawing massive investor interest.
Metaplanet Inc., a Tokyo-based investment firm, became the most actively traded stock in Japan as investor interest surged in response to its Bitcoin-focused strategy. In a single day, trading volume reached ¥132 billion—approximately $920 million—making it the most exchanged stock on the market.
Trading Volume Surges as Metaplanet Leads Market Activity
Metaplanetranked first among all Japanese equities in trading volume, with about 158.8 million shares being exchanged. As a result, the company surpassed Nippon Telegraph, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and SoftBank in status. Because of recent announcements from Metaplanet about Bitcoin, traders are treating it as a hub for crypto inquiries.

Metaplanet’s stock has been popular with both individual and professional investors since its price is tied to the movement of Bitcoin. During the last session, it held the 3rd and 4th positions globally for dollar volume and trades on the OTC Markets, among nearly 12,000 companies. This level of sustained trading activity reflects growing confidence among market participants that Bitcoin-aligned equities may offer strategic growth opportunities.
Metaplanet Strategic Growth and Retail Participation
Following MicroStrategy’s lead, Metaplanet began holding Bitcoin in its treasury earlier this year. Because of this, worldwide investors are now turning to stock markets to gain access to digital assets. So far, the firm’s bitcoin holdings totaled 7,800, acquired in May 2025 for about $712.5 million or $91,343 per bitcoin.
As part of its most recent transaction, Metaplanet bought 1,004 BTC for about $104.3 million. Bitcoin represented most of the company’s Q1 2025 profits, accounting for 88% and generating total revenue of $6 million. Because Bitcoin has grown this year, Metaplanet’s portfolio of Bitcoins has delivered a 189.1% increase, reassuring investors about its planned goals.
Just recently, the company built up more Bitcoin than El Salvador, as Japanese retailers continue to show interest. Japan’s system of taxes makes many local investors choose equities to get involved with Bitcoin, rather than acquiring it themselves. In Japan, capital gains from crypto are treated like regular income, but NISA accounts can hold up to $25,000 of stocks each year, so Metaplanet stands out as a favorite.
High Short Interest Signals Potential Reversal
Metaplanet also became Japan’s most shorted stock, with 25.25% of its float borrowed as of early April. This data suggested that many traders were betting against its Bitcoin-centric approach.

If Bitcoin prices continued to rise, however, short sellers could face a squeeze. Forced buybacks might follow, adding upward pressure on the stock. This scenario introduced both risk and reward, depending on broader market direction.
Volatility and Liquidity Attracted Traders
Metaplanet’s stock experienced high volatility, with sharp price movements and surging trading volume. Investors viewed this not as a deterrent, but as a signal of opportunity. As the saying goes, “volatility is vitality,” especially in markets where momentum drives participation.
The stock’s growing liquidity allowed investors of all sizes to enter and exit positions with minimal slippage. High engagement and reduced friction made Metaplanet one of Japan’s most watched equities in 2025.
