Ripple-SEC Motion Denied: XRPL Expands With Wormhole Support

Key Highlights:

  • Judge Torres rejected Ripple and the SEC’s motion to amend a $125M penalty and injunction.
  • XRP sales to U.S. institutions remain restricted as Ripple’s appeal process continues.
  • XRPL gains momentum with Wormhole integration, enhancing cross-chain interoperability.

The legal battle of Ripple with the U.S. SEC has taken another turn. This happened after Judge Analisa Torres rejected a joint motion to amend the court’s previous ruling.

The motion aimed to dissolve a permanent injunction and reduce Ripple’s $125 Million penalty. However, it failed to meet the legal threshold.

Meanwhile, Ripple’s XRP Ledger (XRPL) ecosystem advanced technically. It secured a key integration with Wormhole to expand its multichain and institutional-grade capabilities.

Court Rejects Ripple and SEC’s Relief Motion

Judge Torres ruled that neither party had a good reason to change the final decision. The court emphasized that negotiated settlements cannot supersede the final judgments. Ripple and the SEC had asked the court to amend its previous order, which was made in 2024.

However, the judge pointed out that final judgments are not convenient arrangements that can be amended. The motion failed to meet the Rule 60(b) test, which only applies in extraordinary cases.

The court also pointed out that reversing the injunction or penalty would not greatly interest the general population.

The parties’ consent was not held to have enough legal merit to change the judgment. Consequently, the request was rejected, and the appeal process will proceed as initially intended.

Settlement Insufficient to Modify Court Ruling

This combined action was after an earlier rejection on procedural grounds. The amended one once again attempted to dissolve the injunction and reduce the penalty to $50 Million. Nevertheless, the court reiterated that this did not justify such relief.

Ripple claimed that the enforcement attitude of the SEC had changed, which was a reason to be lenient. However, the judge mentioned that the previous SEC proceedings did not imply such penalties and final judgments.

Thus, the new regulatory environment alone could not influence the court’s decision. Also, the court claimed that legal consequences should be based on people’s accountability, not personal agreements.

The decision denied any argument that the agency’s discretion should supersede the court. By this, the judge did not lose all confidence in the validity and purpose of the original ruling.

Ripple’s Legal Flexibility Narrowed by Court Decision

Ripple hoped the court would change its position due to a mutual agreement with the SEC. However, the denial does not allow Ripple to escape the financial penalty or the injunction against institutional XRP sales. The legal burden of the company remains the same.

Ripple now has to keep on with its appeal without the court making any favorable adjustments. The rejection leaves the company with few short-term regulatory relief options. The ruling also limits Ripple’s operations in the U.S. and its institutional outreach.

XRP Ledger Gains Institutional Momentum Amid Legal Standoff

Regardless of the legal verdict, the ecosystem of Ripple is growing in the technical aspect. Wormhole has announced a strategic partnership with Ripple to connect to the XRP Ledger and the EVM Sidechain.

The action will increase XRPL multichain functionality and improve cross-chain functionality.

Wormhole is set to enable seamless cross-blockchain interaction for DeFi, payments, and tokenized real-world assets. This advancement allows institutions and developers to build multichain applications directly within the XRPL ecosystem.

This move is in line with the Ripple plan to push institutional-level utility. The European Central Bank individually chose the XRP Ledger in its 12-month Digital Euro pilot program.

Axiology systems built on open-source XRPL tech are set to support over 500 institutions. This rollout will operate within the ECB’s wholesale DLT sandbox environment. This indicates increasing confidence in XRPL as a regulated digital asset infrastructure.
