Key Highlights:
- Bitvavo receives MiCA license from Dutch financial regulator
- Approval strengthens Bitvavo’s position across the EU crypto market
- MiCA license ensures full compliance with new EU crypto rules
Bitvavo has reportedly become the first crypto exchange in the Netherlands to obtain the MiCA license. It’s a significant milestone in the Netherlands’ regulatory compliance with crypto exchanges.

The new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework of the European Union grants the license. It enables Bitvavo to offer its complete services in all EU countries.
On June 26, 2025, the news was announced on the official blog and the X account of the company. The licensing makes Bitvavo a leader in the European changing landscape of digital assets.
A Megamark for Bitvavo
Bitvavo is a Dutch exchange that has been targeting expansion by the European Union since its inception. Having secured the MiCA license, the company has competitive and legal strength to provide services to a broader EU customer base.
According to Mark Nuvelstijn, CEO of Bitvavo, obtaining a MiCA license reflects the company’s striving to grow responsibly.
“It allows us to do so, with the continuation of crypto services, as well as the meeting of the most rigorous regulatory standards across Europe.”
De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) is the Dutch central bank responsible for overseeing digital assets under the MiCA framework in the Netherlands. It granted the required license for compliance.
What Is MiCA and Why Does It Matter
The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) is an iconic law bill tabled by the European Union. Its goal is establishing a common regulatory framework on digital assets in all 27 member countries. MiCA intends to address stablecoin issuers, wallet providers, and crypto exchanges.
The licensees under MiCA are subject to stringent regulations. It regards transparency, consumer protection, anti-money laundering (AML), and user funds separation. Cryptocurrency firms ‘ marketing assets are also checked, and crypto firms’ digital asset promotion is also put under check.
With a MiCA license, companies like Bitvavo can now offer regulated crypto services across all EU member states. They no longer need to apply for separate licenses in each country.
Fortifying Confidence in the European Cryptocurrency Markets
The step by Bitvavo comes at a moment when credibility in the crypto space is essential. Several major platforms have failed in recent years. This has increased the urgency for transparency, strong regulation, and better protection for consumers.
By complying with MiCA, Bitvavo signals to users and regulators that it’s committed to operating transparently and securely. This shows their readiness to function fully within a regulated environment. This may also get other exchanges that exist in Europe into line or lose out.
“MiCA will separate the serious players from those not ready for the next stage of crypto adoption,” said Eva van Dijk, a financial law expert at Utrecht University. “Bitvavo’s license proves that the Dutch market can lead responsibly in the EU.”
Bitvavo’s Next Move
Having obtained the license, Bitvavo will expand its product range further. The exchange already has over 200 digital assets and more than 1.5 million users.
With MiCA compliance, new services like euro-denominated stablecoins, institutional products, and wider European collaborations can now be introduced. The exchange emphasized its commitment to regulatory alignment.
It plans to strengthen its internal risk management systems. Compliance structures will be regularly updated. These actions ensure continued adherence to evolving MiCA standards.
