Ripple Labs to Acquire Stablecoin Platform Rail for $200 Million

Key Insights:

  • Ripple announced it is acquiring stablecoin payment platform Rail for $200 million.
  • Ripple aims to leverage Rail’s infrastructure to continue building its RLUSD stablecoin.
  • Tron surged with $83 billion in USDT Circulation following the passing of the GENIUS legislation, with upside for RLUSD.

Blockchain payments firm Ripple Labs has signed a deal to acquire Rail, a stablecoin-powered global payments platform, for $200 million. This deal will see Ripple and Rail provide a comprehensive stablecoin payments solution on the market.

Details of the Ripple and Rail Deal

As revealed in a press release, the acquisition is still awaiting approval and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The acquisition holds several benefits for Ripple. First, it will help boost the firm’s standing as a leader in digital asset payments infrastructure.

Ripple has played a huge role in blockchain payments. The blockchain provides an expansive payout network and market-leading digital asset liquidity.

Additionally, Rail will expand Ripple’s capabilities with virtual accounts and automated back-office infrastructure. As a result, transaction operations will become streamlined on the Ripple blockchain.

Ripple integration with Rail will also help the firm seek to offer a more scalable solution for clients engaged in cross-border transactions. A Rail has an infrastructure that will fit perfectly into Ripple’s payment system.

Rail uses stablecoins to deploy cross-border payments. Rail CEO Bhanu Kohli said the

The platform has built the fastest way to settle global business payments using stablecoins.

Compared to longer settlement times for fiat payments, transactions on Rail are cheaper and can clear in just hours.

Bhanu noted that Rail is forecasted to process over 10% of the $36 billion global B2B stablecoin payments in 2025.

Implications of the Rail Integration on RLUSD

Notably, the Rail acquisition is seen as a continuation of Ripple’s expansion in the stablecoin sector. Ripple announced the launch of its Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin on December 17, 2024.

Following its release, the RLUSD stablecoin soon became available on top exchanges, including Uphold, Bitso, MoonPay, Archax, and CoinMENA.

Adam Cochran, a partner in Cinneamhain Ventures, labeled RLUSD as a “Trojan Horse.”

He highlighted that the RLUSD stablecoin can help transform the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and traditional banking sectors.

In July, Ripple announced BNY Mellon as the main custodian of the RLUSD stablecoin reserves. The collaboration highlights Ripple’s willingness to work with regulators and spread the adoption of RLUSD across the financial market.

Ripple is also pursuing a national banking license from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). This license would allow the RLUSD stablecoin to operate under a regulated framework.

Considering Ripple’s expansion in the stablecoin sector, the Rail acquisition could increase payment support for RLUSD.

As such, RLUSD is anticipated to challenge major stablecoin players like Tether (USDT) and Circle’s USDC.

Tron Sees Massive Shakeup After GENIUS Stablecoin Bill Passing

Meanwhile, the timing of the Ripple-Rail acquisition deal comes shortly after the passage of the GENIUS Act. Thus, it highlights Ripple’s strategic alignment with favorable regulatory developments in the U.S.

The U.S. Congress passed the GENIUS Act on July 18, 2025, marking the first federal regulatory framework for payment stablecoins.

The law focuses on consumer protection, financial stability, and AML compliance. It establishes a legal foundation for dollar-backed digital assets in the U.S.

The Tron blockchain took a major step forward in the stablecoin race following the GENIUS Act, as revealed by CryptoQuant.

Notably, $1 billion worth of USDT was minted on the Tron network just after the law passed. This rally pushed Tron’s total circulating USDT supply to over $83 billion.

The Tron blockchain now hosts about 51% of all USDT in circulation, given the $163 billion total supply of USDT. This solidifies Tron as a leading infrastructure for stablecoin settlement.

In the long term, Ripple’s RLUSD is poised to also benefit from the provisions of the GENIUS law.
