Citi Predicts Bitcoin Price at 10% of Global Markets as $9B Leaves Exchanges

Key Insights:

  • Citi sees Bitcoin at 10% of global markets by 2030.
  • Whale reserves dropped 100,000 BTC, biggest selloff since 2022.
  • Analysts disputed Q4 peak, citing flawed statistical reasoning.

Citi projected that Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies could account for 10% of global markets by 2030. The forecast came as 79,000 Bitcoin, worth $8.87 billion, left exchanges in the past month, while whale reserves dropped by 100,000 BTC, marking the largest selloff since 2022.

Citi Forecast Adds Long-Term Optimism

Crypto Rover cited Citi’s prediction that crypto would reach 10% of global financial markets within five years. The $1.7 trillion bank highlighted institutional adoption, spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, and rising corporate treasuries as drivers.

The projection echoed a growing shift among traditional finance giants. BlackRock, Fidelity, and others have funneled billions into digital assets since early 2024. Citi’s forecast framed Bitcoin as a structural element of future global portfolios, not merely a speculative hedge.

Analysts said the bank’s forecast reinforced expectations that digital assets were evolving from fringe investments into mainstream assets. Still, the path remains volatile, with large-scale exchange withdrawals and whale behavior shaping short-term sentiment.

Whale Activity Raises Short-Term Caution

Ali reported that 79,000 BTC left exchanges in the past month. The withdrawals, valued at $8.87 billion, often signal stronger investor confidence, as holders move coins into cold storage.

Yet Crypto Crib noted that whale reserves dropped by more than 100,000 BTC during the same period. That was the sharpest decline since 2022, raising questions over whether whales were selling into strength or repositioning.

“Spooked or just taking profits?” Crypto Crib asked, reflecting market uncertainty. The decline coincided with profit-taking across equities and commodities, suggesting large players hedged exposure.

Such moves underlined the tension between bullish long-term forecasts and cautious short-term flows. Exchange data showed retail traders absorbing some of the selling pressure, while institutional desks continued reallocating risk.

Cycle Peak Debate Intensifies

While withdrawals and forecasts dominated headlines, analysts clashed over Bitcoin’s trajectory into year-end. Some traders argued that Bitcoin would hit a cycle-high in Q4, aligning with historical halving cycles.

PlanC challenged the view, warning that statistical reasoning was being misapplied. “Anyone who thinks Bitcoin has to peak in Q4 of this year does not understand statistics or probability,” he wrote on X.

PlanC compared cycle assumptions to betting on repeated coin flips. He argued that three past cycles offered insufficient data to justify a deterministic model. “There is zero fundamental reason — other than a psychological, self-fulfilling prophecy — for the peak to occur in Q4 2025,” he added.

His comments followed industry debate on whether the halving cycle still mattered in the age of corporate treasuries and U.S.-listed spot ETFs. PlanC suggested the cycle narrative risked misleading retail traders expecting mechanical outcomes.

Diverging Institutional Views

Canary Capital CEO Steven McClurg told investors in Aug. that Bitcoin had a “greater than 50% chance” of reaching $140,000–$150,000 this year, before a bear market next year. He tied the view to liquidity cycles and ETF flows.

Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan took the opposite side. In July, he said 2026 could be another up year for Bitcoin, citing structural adoption trends.

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes and Unchained’s Joe Burnett went further. Both projected Bitcoin at $250,000 before 2025 ended. Their forecasts relied on ETF inflows, supply constraints, and macroeconomic easing.

The divergence showed how little consensus existed, even among high-profile names. Traders faced conflicting narratives between short-term cycle logic, institutional models, and long-term structural optimism.

Bitcoin Price Stays Volatile

Bitcoin traded near $111,238 on Friday, up 96.15% year-on-year, according to CoinMarketCap. Still, the market reflected heightened volatility as whale movements clashed with institutional buying.

CoinGlass data showed Q4 was historically Bitcoin’s best-performing quarter, averaging 85.42% returns since 2013. Yet analysts warned past averages carried little predictive power, given ETF inflows and corporate adoption had changed market structure.

For now, Citi’s 2030 projection contrasted with whale selloffs and cycle debates. Traders balanced optimism on institutional growth against caution over short-term liquidity risks.

The coming weeks may provide clarity as macroeconomic releases and ETF flows steer positioning. Until then, Bitcoin remains caught between bullish forecasts and skeptical statistics.
