The Big Take: Can Crypto Really Make You Rich?

Key Insights:

  • Scott Melker said Bitcoin now protects wealth more than creating fast riches.
  • Gemini said $1,000 in XRP grew to $4,086, while Bitcoin rose to $1,907 in one year.
  • Forecasts predicted Bitcoin could hit $250,000 and Ethereum $10,000 in possible market shifts.

Crypto is back in the spotlight after top industry voice Scott Melker warned Bitcoin may not deliver quick riches.

At the same time, Gemini shared strong one-year returns from several altcoins. Price forecasts fueled debate on whether investors should act now or wait.

Bitcoin’s Role: Hedge or Path to Wealth?

On September 6, 2025, Scott Melker posted on X that Bitcoin was not likely to make people rich quickly.

He said that even if Bitcoin doubled or tripled from its price of $110,862, it would not match the 100 times growth seen in earlier years.

Melker explained that Bitcoin was more useful as protection against inflation than as a tool for sudden wealth.

He said its strength was in helping people avoid losing money over time. For him, Bitcoin had moved from being a high-risk bet to more of a long-term store of value.

His comments reached a large audience on X and sparked debate. Some agreed, saying Bitcoin remains a safer option compared to smaller tokens.

Meanwhile, other market participants pointed out that altcoins often give a much bigger returns in shorter periods.

The split showed that investors were looking at Bitcoin in two different ways.

One as a shield against slow loss of value or as a missed chance compared to fast-moving alternatives.

This debate highlighted a key question in 2025. Was Bitcoin still the best asset to invest in, or has its time as a wealth builder passed?

Melker’s view suggested investors should not expect the kind of life-changing gains seen in the past.

How Crypto Returns Compared Over the Past Year

The conversation around Melker’s post coincides with the Gemini Exchange market forecast

Gemini showed what a $1,000 investment in different coins in September 2024 would have been worth one year later.

As disclosed, XRP led the pack at $4,086. AAVE followed with $2,743, LINK with $2,130, and DOGE with $2,124.

Bitcoin came in at $1,907. Ethereum would have raked in $1,793, Litecoin $1,695, Solana $1,552, and PEPE $1,358.

Notably, these results showed that altcoins had outperformed Bitcoin in the past year.

The gains were also much larger than those seen in traditional assets, as stocks often return 10% to 20% in a year.

While bonds return 3% to 5%, real estate can grow steadily, but it usually requires much more starting capital.

However, market participants also noted the risks, all hinged on how volatile crypto assets can be. Sharp drops are common, and big gains can disappear in days.

For investors, the numbers showed both the chance of high rewards and the risk of sudden losses.

The data became another part of the debate around whether crypto was worth the gamble.

Forecasts Raise the Question: Should Investors Move Now?

Alongside the data, several forecasts for September 2025 added fuel to the discussion.

Analysts predicted that the Bitcoin price could reach $126,211, with a low of $112,730 and an average of $119,470.

Ethereum was forecasted as primed to climb to $5,300, with a low of $4,391. Solana was expected to trade between $121 and $495. XRP’s range was pegged at $1.80 to $4.14.

In the long term, former Bitmex CEO Arthur Hayes said Bitcoin could hit $250,000 and Ethereum $10,000 before the end of 2025.

These numbers drew attention but also warnings. Other market observers said the crypto market had a history of sharp pullbacks, and recovery often takes time.

Investors were told to do research and avoid acting on predictions alone. The mix of high hopes and real risks made the decision difficult.

Forecasts gave reasons to believe in strong gains, but the history of volatility showed why caution was needed.
