A public dispute over XRP utility emerged this week after VanEck executive Matthew Sigel questioned the asset’s purpose.
His remarks triggered wide community reactions, masking the fact that the first XRP ETF reached the highest first-day trading volume of any ETF launched this year.
Matthew Sigel’s Comments Spark Immediate Pushback
Matthew Sigel, a top research executive at VanEck, said on social media X that he still does not understand what the XRP blockchain does.
However, he also stated that he respects the strong support the XRP community shows for the project. His brief message spread quickly and triggered a wave of replies from users who closely follow the asset.
Some users said that he had turned away an important opportunity for VanEck.
One person claimed that the firm could have launched a major ETF and suggested that Sigel might face pressure inside the company.

Another user wrote that markets decide what has value and that he should not try to stop people from buying XRP.
Sigel responded by saying that the investors involved in Bitcoin today include university endowments, sovereign wealth funds, and a central bank.
He added that twelve countries support Bitcoin mining at the government level.
He said that anyone who wants to invest in XRP is free to do so and that he is not blocking interest in the asset.
Other replies claimed that Sigel does not fully understand blockchain technology.
One well-known community member, Panos, listed features he believes set the XRP Ledger apart.
He said the ledger has a built-in exchange, token burning, support for payments, and other functions without the use of smart contracts. He also stated that the design aimed to surpass the limitations of Bitcoin.
Strong XRP ETF Debut Raises New Questions
The discussion grew as attention shifted to the first XRP ETF. The product with the ticker symbol XRPC recorded $58 million in trading volume on its first day.
Analyst Eric Balchunas said it was the highest first-day volume of any ETF launched this year and only slightly above the total reached by a competing product linked to Solana.
Journalist Eleanor Terrett said the trading numbers placed XRPC at the top of all ETF launches this year.
She added that the size of the XRP community helped drive interest in the product.
Meanwhile users also compared the size of the companies behind the different filings. One user pointed out that Canary Capital manages between $250 million and $300 million.
Bitwise manages around $15 billion. Franklin Templeton controls about $1.69 trillion.
He suggested that future ETF launches by larger firms might set even higher records.
Price movements became another point of concern. One user noted that XRP often experiences rapid fluctuations and that a similar pattern may recur.
Another user said that XRP fell 7.98% on the day the ETF went live and worried that more ETF launches could lead to further drops.
A few users said that some products were already active in the market. Others joked that too many new ETFs could push the price down.
Outlook as More XRP ETF Filings Wait in Line
Only one XRP ETF launched on the day under discussion, but several more filings remain under review.
Some community members believe the next wave of launches could increase interest in the asset.

Others think the effect might be small and that legal clarity would matter more to long-term value.
The debate over XRP utility continues. Sigel’s comments brought renewed attention to concerns about how the asset is used.
At the same time, the strong first-day performance of XRPC showed that there is demand for ETF exposure to XRP.
The community remains divided on what the next round of ETF approvals might mean for price, volume, and broader adoption.
