Key Highlights:
- Crypto markets decline as trade tensions and liquidity constraints drive increased selling pressure.
- Traders show strong dip-buying interest, but analysts warn of potential further downside risks.
- Market conditions are easing, with falling bond yields and oil prices signaling a possible rebound.
The crypto market has entered a sharp downturn, driven by declining confidence and intensifying global trade tensions. Bitcoin has dropped below $80,000 for the first time since its bull run began in November 2024.
This marked a 7.5% decline in the past 24 hours. The broader market has followed suit, with Ethereum down 8.89% to $2,131.33 and posting a 23.63% weekly drop.
Significant assets, including XRP, BNB, and Solana, have also seen steep losses. Meanwhile, selling pressure in global stock markets has compounded the uncertainty, further weighing on investor sentiment.
Crypto Market Sentiment and the “Buy the Dip” Narrative
Despite the sharp decline, social media discussions indicate that traders remain confident in buying the dip. Santiment has reported a surge in mentions of dip-buying across platforms such as X, Reddit, Telegram, and BitcoinTalk.
This marks the highest level of interest in crypto dip-buying since July 2024. However, historical trends suggest that excessive optimism often precedes further price declines.
Crypto market analysts suggest waiting for social sentiment to cool before expecting a rebound. Typically, markets move against the prevailing sentiment, and strong enthusiasm for accumulating assets could indicate more downside.
Santiment data showed that market conditions might become more favorable for a potential recovery when dip-buying sentiment decreases.
Liquidity Constraints Impacting Markets
The ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute has significantly affected the market downturn. The Kobeissi Letter recently posted a data report regarding this matter on X.
Per their extracted data, since January 20, trade tensions have led to an $800 Billion reduction in total crypto market capitalization. This brought it down from $3.7 Trillion to $2.8 Trillion.
The latest development came as former President Donald Trump imposed a new 10% tariff on Chinese imports. This added to existing levies and further strained global markets.
Previously seen as a hedge against economic instability, Bitcoin has not performed as expected in this environment. Unlike past cycles, where BTC and gold moved in tandem, the correlation between the two assets has weakened.
While Bitcoin has declined, gold prices have surged, reflecting a shift in investor preference toward traditional safe-haven assets. According to The Kobeissi Letter, the market has also had liquidity constraints.
Historically, reduced market liquidity has previously weakened crypto prices. This included the February 1 flash crash when a sudden drop in liquidity wiped $760 Billion in just 60 hours.
During periods of trade wars, liquidity moved into the U.S. dollar. It is now at its highest value against the Canadian dollar since 2003. This has only increased selling pressure across risk assets, including the crypto market.
Tightening Market Conditions And Potential Rebound
Global Macro Investor’s Head of Macro Research, Julien Bittel, just provided some information. It claims that since late 2024, market conditions have been getting stricter, which has caused recent price volatility.
The global growth concerns again prevail due to the draining of liquidity and weakening of economic indicators.
However, data shows things have begun to ease in the past few months. Specifically, the U.S. dollar has dropped, bond yields have fallen, and oil prices have come down.
Ultimately, the crypto market analyst notes these factors may portend a rebound. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) of Bitcoin has fallen, now at 23, the most oversold level since August of 2023.
In the past, such rebounds usually came on the heels of extreme bearish sentiment. However, there are near-term downside risks.
Despite further declines likely, the crypto market sentiment may turn around in the coming weeks. Moving ahead, this could bring back stabilization in the market.
