Will Ethereum Price Break Out Like Gold as Whales and Burn Rates Align?

Ethereum (ETH) price is approaching an important technical area as analysts compare it to previous gold rallies. Deflation of supplies, more whale activity, and resemblance to the previous boom of altcoins all indicate that a surge may soon happen.

Ethereum Price Structure Resembles Gold Setup

A recent chart suggested that Ethereum price rise resembles gold’s multi-year increase. Analyst CryptoGoos posted a chart that noted five important turning points on the ETH price chart near the $4,000 level. This arrangement has mirrored what happened with gold before its fast rise in 2023, with it also starting in a similar five-step pattern.

In Ethereum case, the price is in a consolidation phase between the $1,800 and $3,800 levels, with the fifth test of resistance yet to occur. If the structure continues to follow the gold pattern, a break above $4,000 may follow. The chart outlined a rounded accumulation base and repeat testing of support and resistance levels, pointing to market compression before a possible upward expansion.

Supply Contraction Reinforces Long-Term Ethereum Scarcity

Meanwhile, Ethereum continues to demonstrate deflationary trends. There has been a net decrease in the supply of ETH of -0.38% per year since the Merge. There were 4.59 million burning and 8.19 million being produced. This differs from the current inflation rate of Bitcoin and how Ethereum used to be issued using proof-of-work.

Notably, the decline in circulating supply is primarily driven by Ethereum’s fee burn mechanism, which removes ETH from circulation during network activity. According to live data from ultrasound money, issuance has decreased to approximately 737,000 ETH annually.

Additionally, the annual burn rate remains above 1.2 million ETH. These supply dynamics reduce potential selling pressure and increase scarcity, especially during periods of network usage growth.

Whale Position Suggests Confidence in ETH Price

More so, there is growing interaction with the blockchain from large wallets. One Ethereum whale is alleged to have gone long on $13 million in ETH when the price was $2,575, using 15x leverage.

According to analyst Ted Pillows, the trading strategy is based on 5,000 ETHUSD contracts. Notably, it is already slightly in the green since the asset has risen above the entry zone.

Moreover, having a big short-to-mid-term position is often a sign of strong belief in upcoming price changes. Whale trades are usually observed to find out if there are early signs of institutional buying from large traders. The entry near a recent local low suggests that the position may be anticipating either a retest of resistance or a breakout continuation.

2017 Fractal Adds to Altseason Speculation

Additionally, other analysts have noted that Ethereum price current weekly chart setup bears a resemblance to its behavior in early 2017. At that time, the asset consolidated beneath horizontal resistance, retested its 200-week moving average, and then broke out into a multi-month rally.

A recent chart shared by analyst MikybullCrypto showed Ethereum price forming a similar consolidation zone near $2,950 while bouncing off long-term moving averages.

Furthermore, the similarity to the 2017 events has sparked thoughts of a bigger altcoin rally. At the start of that cycle, ETH price took the lead, and altcoins rose after it.

A breakout from the current range may align with the onset of a new phase in the market, referred to as altseason. The presence of strong support at $1,700 and horizontal resistance near $3,700 further supports the structural similarity to past breakout setups.
