U.S.-China trade talks kicked off in London, reigniting market tension as investors watch for updates on tariffs and rare earth exports. Crypto markets may rally or tumble depending on the outcome of this high-stakes negotiation round.
London Hosts Critical Round of U.S.-China Trade Talks
Top officials from the United States and China began a new round of trade negotiations in London on Monday, hoping to defuse tensions that have rattled global markets for months.
The talks come less than two weeks after both countries agreed on a preliminary easing of tariffs in Geneva. That deal triggered a relief rally across equities. But recent export restrictions and conflicting interpretations of the Geneva commitments have again strained relations between the world’s two largest economies.

The current meeting, held at a yet-undisclosed location in London, includes U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. China’s delegation is led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. U.K. officials confirmed their country is not participating directly but is facilitating the venue.
Rare Earths, Export Controls Dominate U.S.-China Trade Talks
A major point of contention remains China’s April decision to suspend exports of rare earth minerals and magnets. The move disrupted supply chains tied to aerospace, semiconductors, and military equipment manufacturing, drawing direct criticism from Washington.
In their latest call, Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly asked U.S. President Donald Trump to reverse certain trade measures, while Trump emphasized rare earth shipments. According to his post on social media, Trump said the conversation concluded “very positively.”
By the following day, China had agreed to resume exports of key minerals. Still, U.S. officials have accused Beijing of slow-walking on other pledges from Geneva, raising fresh doubts about implementation ahead of this week’s talks.
“The administration has been monitoring China’s compliance with the deal,” said White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt in a Sunday interview. She added the goal is to “move forward to have more comprehensive trade talks.”
Crypto Investors Watch Closely for Clarity or Chaos
Market sentiment across crypto and equities remains tied to the outcome of these negotiations. During the last major tariff standoff, cryptocurrencies and risk assets suffered sharp declines. Traders are now eyeing whether a repeat will follow or if markets could surge on signs of a durable compromise.
“This could be the most important week for crypto,” said Junaid Dar in a post on X. “If talks go well—we could see markets go bonkers.”
Ash Crypto echoed the urgency in a separate post, calling on followers to “pray for a positive outcome” as the London meetings commence.

The S&P 500 Index has already bounced back from an 18% drawdown earlier in the year, much of that recovery driven by optimism after the Geneva talks. Crypto assets like Bitcoin (BTC) followed suit. However, any breakdown in discussions this week could spark renewed downside pressure.
London Round Seen as Pivotal in Fragile Truce
Officials on both sides have framed Monday’s meeting as an effort to solidify the framework agreed upon last month. The Geneva truce included a 90-day plan to scale back mutual tariffs that had, by early April, reached triple digits in some categories.
Howard Lutnick’s presence in London signals that export controls not covered in Geneva will now be central to discussions. His absence from previous negotiations makes his role this week particularly noteworthy.
Despite the fragile progress, deeper challenges persist. Neither side has addressed disputes over Taiwan, the fentanyl trade, or broader economic policies like state subsidies and technology transfers.
Still, both delegations appear under pressure to stabilize ties.
“We want China and the United States to continue moving forward with the agreement,” Leavitt said, hinting that failure to do so could restart broader economic retaliation.
High Stakes, Unclear Outcome
With global markets on edge, the London round could shape the economic trajectory for the rest of 2025. Investors are seeking not just resolution on tariffs but also predictability after months of disruption.
Any sign of compromise could extend recent rallies across risk assets. However, should the talks fail or stall the prospect of renewed restrictions may quickly sour sentiment.
