Metaplanet Doubles Down on Bitcoin With $5B Plan to Hit 210K BTC

Key Insights:

  • Metaplanet approved a $5B capital boost to its U.S. subsidiary to fund its aggressive Bitcoin treasury expansion plan.
  • The firm targets acquiring 210,000 BTC by end of 2027, representing 1% of Bitcoin’s total supply in circulation.
  • Citigroup and Capital Group bought 3 million MTPLF shares combined this month, signaling strong institutional interest.

Metaplanet, the Tokyo-based company, has stepped up its bid to buy Bitcoin by providing a supplementary capital fund of five billion dollars to its United States subsidiary. The step is part of its strategy to hold 210K Bitcoin, 1% of the total supply, by 2027, further cementing its position as a significant corporate owner of digital currencies.

Metaplanet Allocated $5 Billion for Bitcoin Acquisition

Notably, Metaplanet’s Board of Directors has approved a $5 billion capital allocation to its fully owned U.S. subsidiary. The funds will be used to scale its Bitcoin holdings through a dedicated treasury strategy. The U.S. unit, listed under the MTPLF ticker, is now expected to lead this initiative as part of the company’s cross-border treasury expansion.

Additionally, the allocation came just a day after Metaplanet added 1,111 BTC to its reserves. This step marked the beginning of a more aggressive phase in executing its Bitcoin-focused roadmap known as the “555 Million Plan,” first introduced in early June 2025. Company filings confirm that the latest capital movement will fund strategic Bitcoin purchases throughout the year.

Targeting 210,000 BTC by 2027 End

More so, the firm has set a goal to acquire 210K Bitcoin by the end of 2027. This figure represents 1% of Bitcoin’s total 21 million coin supply. Internal planning documents stated that this would be achieved by a combination of debt finance, equity sales, and subsidiary financing. There is also an emphasis on long-term reserves rather than short-term trading.

Previously, Metaplanet announced a $5.4 billion fundraising round dedicated to Bitcoin purchases. The company plans to deploy this capital incrementally while adapting to market conditions and Bitcoin’s liquidity profile. Executives stated that regional subsidiaries, including the U.S. unit, will have autonomy to secure assets under a globally coordinated treasury strategy.

Institutional Participation Increases in MTPLF Stock

Meanwhile, institutional interest in Metaplanet’s stock has risen in tandem with its treasury moves. Citigroup and Capital Group collectively acquired over 3 million MTPLF shares in June 2025. These purchases were disclosed in recent regulatory filings and suggest growing confidence among asset managers in Metaplanet’s strategy.

Moreover, market analysts have observed that institutional purchases could be a larger picture of a more significant institutional movement to establish positions around a company’s Bitcoin initiatives. MTPLF Trading volumes exploded due to the announcement of the $5 billion allocation, and the share price reacted correspondingly within the short term.

Long-Term Bitcoin Treasury Model Gains Traction

Metaplanet is establishing itself as a corporate Bitcoin stacker with international aspirations. The company described its strategy as a means to capture its digital assets into long-term capital reserves, seeking to enhance its treasury-related activities in terms of yield. The model is similar to the one implemented within MicroStrategy, but the Metaplanet company works in various jurisdictions.

Furthermore, the company is seeking to operate Bitcoin not only as a reserve, but also through the structure of a global capital market. As stated in official publications, the treasury model will allow generating operational efficiencies, minimizing the risk of currency devaluation, and keeping up with the latest trends in digital asset markets.

Meanwhile, recent analysis showed that institutional demand for Bitcoin is strong despite recent price volatility. Exchange-traded funds recorded five straight days of net inflows totaling over $1.3 billion. Analysts like Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley believe Bitcoin is on track to rival the $30 trillion U.S. Treasury market, as major firms continue aggressive accumulation strategies.
