Coinbase Derivatives confirmed the launch of U.S.-regulated perpetual-style futures products for BTC and ETH on July 21. The move marked a key step toward institutionalizing crypto derivatives within U.S. compliance frameworks.
Coinbase Derivatives Perpetual Futures to Launch on July 21
Coinbase Derivatives will roll out two contracts designed to offer perpetual-style exposure to Bitcoin and Ethereum within US regulatory parameters. These are the nano Bitcoin Perpetual-Style Futures, sized at 0.01 BTC, and the nano Ether Perpetual-Style Futures, sized at 0.10 ETH. Both contracts will carry a five-year expiration period and will be available for trading around the clock.

In addition, the initiative is expected to provide US traders with access to a type of product previously limited to offshore platforms. Coinbase stated that this offering will mirror the structure of popular perpetual futures globally, with full compliance under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Perpetual futures have already gained a significant market share in the international crypto derivatives trade volumes. However, they are not generally available in the U.S. under currently applicable regulations.
Product Mechanics Designed for Spot Price Alignment
More so, these new contracts are structured so as to incorporate a funding rate mechanism to ensure that the futures price stays in line with the underlying spot market. Funding will accumulate at an hourly rate and settle twice a day at regular cash adjustment periods.
This model permits a trade environment that replicates real-time market movement and maintains positions pegged to spot valuations.
Moreover, contracts between traders will see the accrued funding either added to or withdrawn from, according to market position at the point of occurrence of each settlement event. The mechanism, alongside long contract lifespan and trading solely serves to replicate global perpetual futures behaviour within a compliant framework.
Regulated Exposure Without Offshore Risks
Up to this point, a notable portion of traders and investors in the US who opined on the acquisition of perpetual futures had to depend on the exchanges abroad. This brought fears in regards to regulatory compliance, asset custody, and counterparty integrity. Coinbase is aiming to eliminate such arrangements by providing a regulated variation of the same, with similar capital efficiency and trading flexibility.
Furthermore, the introduction of US-based perpetual-style futures contracts gives traders a domestic option. That combines risk management tools and strategic positioning capabilities with adherence to local legal frameworks. Access to leverage and simplified contract management are key attributes built into the product’s framework. Enabling a broader range of market participants to engage in futures trading without leaving the US regulatory environment.
Coinbase Plans Retail Expansion and Platform Access
At launch, the products will be available through designated partner platforms. With additional details to be released by Coinbase Derivatives in the weeks ahead. The company also confirmed plans to expand availability to retail users following the initial rollout. This suggests a phased approach to market accessibility, beginning with institutional or advanced traders and progressing to a wider base.
Besides, the trade underlined that this product set is another move towards wider accessibility. And major infrastructure in the US crypto derivatives market. The contracts are designed to serve a variety of market strategies. Including hedging or directional exposure through offering 24/7 trading and long-term expirations.
Recently, Coinbase submitted a request to the SEC to allow the listing of the tokenized stocks on its platform. Should it be approved, the action would allow 24-hour trading of blockchain tokenized stocks and bonds. The company has attempted to obtain a “no-action letter” or an exemptive relief to legally move forward to enhance trade efficiency and reduce transaction costs.
