Ethereum Price Holds Firm as $8T Stablecoin Surge Exposes Risky ETH Short

Ethereum price stayed resilient in late December as on-chain data clashed with a high-profile trading loss. Blockchain tracker Lookonchain reported that pension-usdt.eth reopened a large Ether short despite a market upswing. The trader deployed 30 million United States dollars coin at 3× leverage on Hyperliquid, targeting 20,000 Ether worth about $64.14 million. The position later showed a $1.4 million unrealized loss before closure.

The episode mattered because it unfolded alongside record Ethereum network activity. Token Terminal said stablecoin transfer volume on Ethereum surpassed $8 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2025. That figure nearly doubled from just over $4 trillion in the second quarter. For Ethereum price watchers, the contrast highlighted tension between speculative positioning and fundamental network usage.

Leveraged ETH Short Collides With Network Momentum

Lookonchain said pension-usdt.eth closed the Ether short on Dec. 29, booking a $3.4 million loss. The account previously posted strong results, completing about 70 trades with an 83% win rate and $21.84 million in total profits. The failed trade stood out because it ran against a broader market recovery. Ethereum price hovered near $3,190 during the period, according to market data cited in the sources.

The venue also mattered. The position opened on Hyperliquid, a platform known for high-leverage crypto derivatives. Large leveraged bets often magnify short-term volatility but rarely reflect underlying network demand. In this case, the short coincided with expanding on-chain usage, not weakening metrics. That divergence reduced downside follow-through for Ethereum price.

Stablecoin Transfers Reached Record Levels in Q4

Token Terminal reported that Ethereum processed over $8 trillion in stablecoin transfers during the fourth quarter. The jump followed $4 trillion in the second quarter, showing rapid acceleration within months. Analysts linked the rise to increased settlement activity rather than speculative churn. One commentator, “BMNR Bullz,” said on X that the flows represented “global payments happening on-chain.”

Issuance data supported that view. BlockWorks data cited in the sources showed that the stablecoin supply on Ethereum grew by about 43% in 2025. Total issuance rose from $127 billion to $181 billion by year-end. Expanding supply typically followed demand for usage, rather than short-term trading strategies. For Ethereum price, such trends often underpinned longer holding behavior.

Transactions and Addresses Hit New Highs

Network usage extended beyond stablecoins. Etherscan data showed total daily Ethereum transactions reached an all-time high of 2.23 million in late December. Daily transaction counts increased by 48% year over year, reflecting sustained growth in activity. High-throughput periods often test network relevance under real demand conditions.

Address activity also climbed. Token Terminal reported that monthly active Ethereum addresses reached a peak of 10.4 million in December. Daily unique addresses acting as senders or receivers topped one million during the same period. Broad participation reduced reliance on concentrated trading flows. That distribution typically dampened extreme Ethereum price swings driven by isolated positions.

Ethereum Retained Lead in Tokenized Assets

Ethereum also maintained dominance in real-world asset settlement. Data from RWA.xyz showed the network handled about 65% of the total on-chain real-world asset value, estimated at $19 billion. The share exceeded 70% when Ethereum layer-2 and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks were included. That scale reinforced Ethereum’s role as a settlement layer.

Stablecoin market share echoed that strength. Ethereum accounted for roughly 57% of all issued stablecoins, with the Tron network holding about 27%. Tether remained the largest issuer, with $187 billion outstanding. More than half of that supply resided on Ethereum, according to the cited figures. Such concentration tied stablecoin growth directly to Ethereum price relevance.

What the Data Means for Ethereum Price

The clash between record usage and a failed short offered a clear signal. While leveraged traders attempted to fade rallies, on-chain metrics pointed in the opposite direction. Rising transfers, expanding issuance, and higher address counts suggested persistent demand for block space. Those factors historically aligned with firmer Ethereum price conditions.

In the near term, attention focused on whether transaction volumes would remain elevated into early 2026. Sustained stablecoin flows could continue to anchor network fees and validator incentives. For traders, the episode served as a reminder that large leverage alone rarely overrides structural usage trends. Ethereum price, at least during this period, tracked fundamentals more closely than speculative conviction.
