Mt. Gox: A Tale Of The Rise & Fall of A Major Bitcoin Exchange
  • Mt. Gox was a major BTC exchange that controlled over 70% of Bitcoin transactions.
  • In 2014, Mt. Gox declared bankruptcy as it got hacked, and approximately 650,000 to 850,000 Bitcoins were stolen.
  • The exchange has moved 47229 BTC ($2.7 Billion) to repay the creditors.

Defunct cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox is again in the news, as it has announced its repayment plan for creditors. This has led to market volatility, and the Bitcoin price has dramatically dropped.

Let’s understand the history of Mt. Gox, how it rose to heights and fell drastically, and the current status.

What’s the History of Mt. Gox?

Mt. Gox — short for “Magic: The Gathering Online Exchange” was one of the earliest cryptocurrency exchanges in the crypto world. Jed McCaleb launched this Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange on 18 July 2010, which operated till 2014.

Jed McCaleb primarily aimed to build a site for “Magic: The Gathering Online” card game players to trade their cards like stocks. However, in 2010, he learned about Bitcoin and felt the need for a platform where traders could trade Bitcoins conveniently, and that’s how the Mt. Gox exchange came into play.

Later, in 2011, Mark Karpeles took charge of the site and became the largest shareholder and CEO.

The Story of Rise & Fall

Just after its launch in 2010, Mt. Gox touched several new heights and became the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange. At one point, it was accountable for almost 70% to 80% of Bitcoin transactions worldwide.

However, this rise and prominence attracted the eyes of hackers, and the downfall started. From 2011 to 2014, Mt. Gox faced numerous security breaches. The exchange witnessed the first theft in June 2011, when 25,000 BTC were stolen from 478 accounts. In the same month, June 17, Mt. Gox’s user database was leaked and was available for sale.

In October 2011, Mt. Gox reported the transaction of 2,609 BTC to multiple invalid addresses. The exchange suspended all Bitcoin withdrawals on 7 February 2014. In the series of events, On 23 February 2014, Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès announced his resignation from the Bitcoin Foundation Board.

The firm applied for bankruptcy protection from the creditors on 28 February 2014 and stated that it had lost hundreds of thousands of Bitcoins ranging from  650,000 to 850,000. Some reports suggest that Russian hackers committed this theft.

After the Bankruptcy

In March 2014, Karpeles announced that the exchange had successfully recovered 200,000 Bitcoins from an old digital wallet. This recovery was nothing but magic, which strengthened the hope of creditors.

The Tokyo district court ordered the firm to start the liquidation process in April 2024 and repay its creditors. In an investigation in 2019, the Tokyo District Court sentenced Mark Karpeles to 30 months in prison and suspended him for 4 years. He was found guilty of inflating the data of Mt. Gox’s $33.5 Million holdings.

After a long legal battle, the Tokyo District Court and creditors agreed to a rehabilitation plan for compensation to repay the losses.

Current status

As of July 2024, the repayment plan is still ongoing. In June, the platform announced that it would distribute $9B. By July 5, Mt. Gox moved 47229 Bitcoins, worth $2.7 Billion, to repay the creditors.

There are some anticipations that the creditors may have to wait another 3 months to receive their Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash repayments. The waiting time varies; for Kraken, it is 90 days, while for Bitstamp, it may take up to 60 days.
