- The U.S. District Court in Texas overturned sanctions on Tornado Cash. This marked a significant win for privacy-preserving decentralized platforms.
- Following the ruling, Tornado Cash‘s native token, TORN, surged by over 220%. That stabilized with gains of more than 120% at $16.94.
- Despite the legal victory, Tornado Cash’s developer, Alexey Pertsev, faced ongoing money laundering charges. This kept the platform in a state of cautious optimism.
The Trump administration has brought a mega-shift in the U.S. stance on cryptocurrency. His actions ushered an era of optimism for the crypto industry.
In a groundbreaking legal decision, the U.S. District Court in Texas overturned the sanctions imposed on Tornado Cash. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) implemented these sanctions. The court’s ruling responded to a November 2024 lawsuit filed by six Tornado Cash users.
Those users argued that the sanctions violated their rights. They also highlighted that blockchain transactions are inherently traceable. Following the news, the TORN price skyrocketed by over 220%, stabilizing with a sustained gain of more than 120% at the time of writing.
Likewise, investor confidence has surged alongside the token’s price. This happened as the ruling is widely seen as a victory for the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector.
Beyond the immediate implications for Tornado Cash, this ruling represents a significant turning point for the broader DeFi space.

The court has strengthened the foundation for innovation by affirming the legitimacy of privacy-preserving technologies. Many experts have predicted that the TORN price could climb further. This was fueled by growing interest and optimism in decentralized systems.
How did Tornado Cash’s hacking activity alarm its community and result in a lawsuit?
Meanwhile, the TORN token has seen impressive price gains following the recent legal victory overturning OFAC sanctions. However, despite that, skepticism remains. That’s mainly due to the unresolved legal situation surrounding its developer, Alexey Pertsev.
He was found guilty of money laundering charges. Despite its technological and market advancements, Pertsev’s case overshadowed the platform’s future.

For curious, the story of Tornado Cash began in December 2019. It was launched as a decentralized cryptocurrency protocol aimed at enhancing transaction privacy.
Using Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, Tornado Cash allowed users to mix their funds with others to obscure their origins. It is a feature that quickly gained popularity within the crypto community.
However, this rise in reputation also attracted legal scrutiny. In August 2022, the OFAC blocked Tornado Cash. The OFAC accused it of facilitating the laundering of over $7 Billion in crypto. That includes funds linked to the Lazarus Group, a North Korean hacking organization.
As a result, U.S. citizens and businesses were prohibited from using the service. The move also led to removing Tornado Cash’s GitHub repository and suspending its developers’ accounts.
That very same month, Alexey Pertsev was arrested. Authorities alleged that he played a key role in enabling illegal activities via the platform. The legal troubles intensified further in May 2023 when a hacker exploited the protocol’s DAO governance system.

The hacker did this by submitting a malicious proposal. Furthermore, the attacker gained control over governance tokens, locking votes and ultimately stealing millions from the protocol.
However, surprisingly, the hacker later contacted the TORN community, offering to return governance control.
After significant debate within the community, most members agreed to the hacker’s proposal to minimize further damage. Fortunately, control of the DAO was restored, helping stabilize the project.
Moreover, despite the annulment of sanctions, many issues remain unresolved. Pertsev’s legal challenges are still ongoing. With this, questions persist about the role of Tornado Cash in fostering both innovation and compliance within the crypto sector.
Nevertheless, the overturning of OFAC sanctions is a significant milestone. This signals a turning point in the debate over the regulation of privacy-preserving technologies.
A Bullish Boost After Legal Victory For Tornado Cash
Tornado Cash’s native token, TORN, has had a remarkable few days. TORN’s price skyrocketed after a pivotal court decision overturned the platform’s sanctions.
The token shot up from $7.935 to $26.879 in just a single candle, marking a 220% increase. The sudden surge caught many off guard, pushing the token past critical technical levels.
However, as the dust settles, the TORN price has retraced. The token was now trading around $16.940, still holding onto impressive gains of about 120%.
This dramatic rise didn’t just happen out of nowhere. It resulted from a surge in market momentum, combined with key technical breakouts.
The TORN token broke through its 20-day and 50-day EMA bands in hours. This set a new foundation for potential future growth. Despite the bullish sentiment, there’s some caution in the air.

Indicators like the Awesome Oscillator and MACD histogram showed that momentum is still building. However, the RSI was currently at 72.21. This signaled that the Tornado Cash was in the overbought zone.
With such an indicator, it’s clear that the market may need to cool off before making another push. Now, eyes are on the RSI. If it falls back into the 50-60 range, TORN could be poised for another rally to shoot. That could further potentially even aim for its November 2024 highs.
