Dogecoin is a peer-to-peer digital currency created in December 2013 by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a satirical fork of Litecoin. Despite its origins as internet humour based on the Shiba Inu doge meme, Dogecoin became a functioning payments-oriented cryptocurrency with an active network and substantial market capitalisation. The protocol uses a modified Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm and produces a new block approximately every minute. Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no hard supply cap — it issues approximately five billion new coins per year, creating ongoing inflation.
