Coinbase Clash: Justin Sun Questions Asset Listing Practices
  • Coinbase, one of the largest exchanges, is under fire from industry heavyweights for its asset listing and delisting methods.
  • Justin Sun, the founder of Tron, confronted Coinbase’s CLO by quoting Brian Armstrong’s 2021 statement.
  • BiT Global, the custodian of wBTC, has filed a lawsuit against Coinbase.

Coinbase is facing criticism for its asset listing & delisting practices. As a part of this criticism, the crypto community witnessed a clash between industry giants on X.

The dispute concerned Justin Sun, Tron’s founder, and Paul Grewal, Coinbase’s chief legal officer (CLO). Tron’s founder confronted Grewal when he tried to defend the company’s listing and delisting policies.

The background of the conflict centers on Coinbase’s decision to delist wBTC and the legal actions taken by BiT Global. BiT Global is the company Sun is associated with. It accused the exchange of prejudice because it included memecoin like PEPE, which has no inherent worth.

Justin Sun’s Public Clash With Coinbase’s CLO

Paul Grewal’s post on X supporting the company’s wBTC delisting procedures sparked the uproar. While giving the reason behind the delisting, **Coinbase’**s CLO stated, “When an asset no longer meets our listing standards, we will drop it.”

Grewal made this post as a quote tweet of news that mentioned that BiT Global had sued the exchange for $1 Billion. Taking a dig at BiT Global, he said, “Thank you Bit Global for the chance to show this to a US federal court and on the entire global crypto stage.”

Sun challenged Paul’s stance and questioned who has the final say at Coinbase. To prove his point, Tron’s founder shared a 2021 statement from Coinbase’s CEO, Brian Armstrong.

In that statement, Brian emphasized, “our goal is to list every asset where it is legal to do so”. Sun argued that the exchange’s current action of delisting wBTC doesn’t fit the CEO’s vision.

Background of the Dispute

The root of this dispute goes back to September 2024, when the exchange announced the delisting of wBTC. Coinbase reportedly delisted wBTC based on periodic reviews and the listing standards.

At the same time, Coinbase launched its tokenized Bitcoin product, cbBTC. Just after the launch, this product achieved significant gains. Furthermore, it emerged as the second-largest tokenized Bitcoin asset.

BiT Global recently assumed custodial responsibility for wBTC. After Coinbase delisted the token, BiT Global filed a lawsuit against the exchange. The lawsuit accuses the decision of delisting as anti-competitive and a violation of multiple state and federal laws.

BiT Global Accuses Coinbase of Unethical Moves

BiT Global alleged that Coinbase was biased. Justin Sun holds a significant stake in the company. The firm accused the exchange of prioritizing market trends over ethical considerations.

They pointed out the exchange’s decision to list Pepe coin (PEPE) to support their allegation. PEPE is a controversial memecoin associated with offensive internet memes.

According to the firm, listing PEPE is evidence of favoring market hype over legitimacy. They referred to the meme character as a “racist Frog”. They accused Coinbase of listing valueless memecoins.

Moreover, Bit Global alleged that wBTC’s delisting was not based on listing standards, rather it was a move to grab market share.
