- Senate Banking Committee has canceled voting on the renomination of the SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw.
- Crenshaw’s departure is a significant win for the Crypto ETF sector.
- Industry leaders hope for a more supportive regulatory environment under Paul Atkins, the next SEC Chair.
President-elect Trump is yet to be sworn in for his second term in office. As the date approaches, the cryptocurrency world is witnessing several significant shifts.
Gary Gensler’s resignation and the subsequent nomination of Paul Atkins as SEC chair were received well by the crypto community. Another positive development, specifically for the Crypto ETF sector, is SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw’s scheduled exit from the agency.
Crenshaw’s term will conclude soon, and reportedly, the Senate Banking Committee won’t rename her for the post.
Like Gensler, she has a reputation for being anti-crypto. Her departure has sparked optimism in the industry.
Senate Banking Committee Cancels Renomination Vote
A renomination vote for Caroline Crenshaw‘s next term as the SEC commissioner was scheduled for Wednesday morning. However, Crenshaw faced a setback, and it was called in the last moments by the Senate Banking Committee.
FOX Business journalist Eleanor Terrett first broke the news of her renomination vote cancellation. In her tweet post, she stated:
“A Senate aide has just informed me that tomorrow’s Senate Banking Committee scheduled markup vote on @SECGov Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw has been canceled.”
The vote was called off citing procedural conflicts in the Senate. Crenshaw’s nomination won’t be processed in time for the December 20 congressional reconvening. This will give Donald Trump the power to name a new commissioner.
Crenshaw’s Anti-Crypto ETF Legacy
Crenshaw joined the SEC as the commissioner back in 2020. She was first appointed under the Trump administration and renominated by President Biden.
Her views have historically aligned closely with current SEC Chair Gary Gensler on regulatory matters. She has criticized the cryptocurrency sector throughout her tenure and is known for adopting a tough stance toward crypto ETFs.
In January 2024, Creshaw strongly opposed the approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Her objection stemmed from more significant fears about market manipulation and fraud in the cryptocurrency industry.
She argued that approving crypto ETFs is “unsound and ahistorical.” She stated, “These products lack sufficient investor protection and oversight, which could harm consumers.”
Her opposition attracted criticism from the crypto giants. Industry leaders like Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong publicly criticized her opposition and labeled it “embarrassing.”
Crypto Industry’s Opposition
The crypto industry, particularly players involved with crypto ETFs, actively campaigned against her renomination. Prominent figures including Coinbase COO Emilie Choi and Tyler Winklevoss of Gemini have opposed her tenure.
Blockchain Association and Digital Chamber also spoke out. The campaign depicted Caroline Crenshaw as being “more anti-crypto than Gensler”.
Stand With Crypto sent emails to Sherrod Brown, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, expressing its distaste. More than 100,000 other advocates also took part in this.
New Leadership, New Direction?
Crenshaw’s exit from SEC is being seen as the beginning of a new era for the Crypto ETF sector. The community has high hopes with Paul Atkins, who is set to take over the leadership.
Atkins is known for his balanced regulatory approach. With him in the office, many aspire for a shift in the SEC’s approach to create a more favorable environment for the crypto industry.
Atkins has outlined plans for his first 100 days to simplify processes and reduce compliance costs. He has pledged to foster innovation in financial markets, particularly in the crypto sector.
