Is Bitcoin Market Shift Toward US Institutions Signaling A New Bull Cycle

Follow The Market Periodical
  • US institutions now hold a larger share of Bitcoin than non-US entities, signaling a shift in market dominance.
  • Since February 2020, 4.85M BTC have left exchanges, indicating a strong accumulation trend among investors.
  • Rising leverage ratios reflect market enthusiasm.

Data from recent analysis show Bitcoin’s global market activity increasingly involves U.S. entities, such as exchanges, banks, and funds.

U.S.-based institutions are holding a larger percentage of Bitcoin (BTC) than ever before compared to non-U.S. entities, pointing to a changing balance of ownership.

Coinciding with the ongoing bull market, this increasing participation is happening as well. Bitcoin’s price resilience is also being supported by the U.S. institutional involvement, while analysts speculate whether the current rally could mark a new cycle top.

Leverage Ratio Offers Insights into Market Sentiment

Bitcoin’s Estimated Leverage Ratio (ELR) continues to be an important metric in order to understand market behavior. This indicator measures how much leverage traders use for margin trading and a look into risk sentiment.

During the 2021 bull run, confidence grew along with a rising leverage ratio, which helped drive prices higher, but also greatly increased the risk of liquidation during downswings.

Despite all the noise in 2018, the relationship between Bitcoin price and the leverage ratio continues to exhibit a strong pattern of market enthusiasm during upswings.

Retail investors are often lured into excessive risk-taking in derivative markets, according to analysts, as market makers inflate Bitcoin’s price.

However, historically this behavior has coincided with bullish sentiment, but might also result in corrections if liquidation events happen.

Younger UTXOs Suggest Market Speculation

Bitcoin’s realized cap, and the age bands of Bitcoin’s UTXO, are analyzed to show the importance of younger coins during market cycles.

Previous cycles top shows that at previous tops coins moved within the last 1 day to 3 months (young UTXOs) began to dominate.

Trends associated with increased market speculation are, as a rule, associated with higher risks.

The UTXO share for the group is trending higher and also closer to levels we have seen during past peaks. Analysts say this points to the market still having room to expand before entering what could be an early distribution phase.

Central Bank and Exchange Trends Highlight Growing Interest

The Czech National Bank’s governor, Ales Michl, has proposed using up to 5 percent of the bank’s 146 billion euros in assets to fund Bitcoin.

He considers Bitcoin as a form of diversification tool and points to rising interest from crypto investors, including U.S.-based Bitcoin ETFs, as a sign of the growing adoption of Bitcoin.

Also, data from Alphractal shows that since February 2020, approximately 5 million BTC have left exchanges. This points to a trend of investors taking on an accumulation strategy.

According to Joao Wedson, “4.85M BTC have left exchanges since February 2020! The Exchange Flux Balance shows a massive shift. Since 2020, the game has changed—everyone wants Bitcoin at all costs.”

Collectively, these factors indicate sustained market interest from the institutional players and retail as well across Bitcoin’s trajectory.
