Layer 1 Assets Command 44.2% of Discussions, Meme Coins Decline
  • Layer 1 assets now drive 44.2% of discussions, up from 28.3% in December, per Santiment.
  • Meme coin discussions fell to 4.0%, down from 9.2% in December, reflecting lower trader interest.
  • Futures volume for meme coins plunged, signaling a shift toward Layer 1 assets.

A shift in trading interest has occurred. It demonstrates that Bitcoin and Layer 1 assets like Ethereum, Solana, Toncoin, and Cardano are attracting more interest in crypto debates.

According todata from Santiment, these top Layer 1 assets collectively account for 44.2% of discussions among specific coins. That marks an increase from previous levels.

Meanwhile, meme coins, including Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and Pepe, are being discussed less frequently across social media. This decline aligns with the recent volatility in speculative assets, leading to meme coin dominance falling behind in discussions.

Layer 1 Assets Gain Market Attention

The data showed a considerable increase in discussions about Layer 1 networks. That functioned as the cryptocurrency space’s core infrastructure.

On December 3, the percentage of discussions regarding the top six Layer 1 assets reached a low of 28.3%. However, it has recovered to 44.2%.

This trend suggested that traders increasingly shift their focus to assets known for scalability, security, and real-world adoption. Bitcoin and Ethereum, two of the most established Layer 1 networks, remain central to the discussion.

Solana, Toncoin, and Cardano also continue to see significant engagement. The shift in focus occurs as traders seek stability and sustainability in a market characterized by rapid fluctuations in speculative assets.

Santiment noted that historically, heightened engagement in meme coins often precedes market corrections. This occurred because speculative excesses frequently result in dramatic reversals as the hoopla subsides.

Declining Interest in Meme Coins

Conversely, meme coins have seen a decline in trader discussions. The combined share of conversations around the top six meme coins has fallen to 4.0%, down from a high of 9.2% on December 31.

Meme coins, typically driven by viral trends and speculative enthusiasm, often experience rapid surges followed by sharp declines. Their declining presence in discussions suggests a cooling-off period in speculative trading.

Santiment also noted that while meme coins remain part of the market, their reduced discussion rates indicate a healthier cycle. The firm suggested that there will be future opportunities for meme coin surges, but the current period reflects a stabilization phase.

Futures Volume Favor Blue-Chips

Additional data from Glassnode shed light on altering trader behavior by comparing futures volume across Layer 1 assets and meme coins. The data showed that Bitcoin’s futures volume declined from $98.4 Billion to $54.4 Billion, marking a 45% drop.

Ethereum saw a more moderate decrease, with its futures volume falling from $43.4 Billion to $36.2 Billion. That reflected a 17% decline. Solana, another key Layer 1 asset, experienced a more pronounced drop of 47%. With this, its futures volume decreased from $14.7 Billion to $7.9 Billion.

Meme coins, in contrast, witnessed sharp declines in futures volume. Dogecoin’s volume fell from $20.0 billion to $3.0 billion, representing an 85% drop.

Similarly, Shiba Inu’s futures volume plummeted from $2.72 billion to $0.28 billion, marking a 90% decrease. Pepe, Bonk, and WIF also saw significant drops, with futures volume decreasing by 78%, 92%, and 69%, respectively.

The rapid rise and subsequent decline in meme coin futures volume highlight the short-lived nature of speculative trading. Trader preference for more established networks is supported by the different futures volume trends for Layer 1 assets and meme coins.

While Bitcoin and Ethereum maintained relatively high demand despite pullbacks, meme coins experienced brief spikes followed by sharp declines. This pattern suggested a shift toward a market environment where traders focus more on long-term stability than short-term speculation.
