$100B Bitcoin Loss: Short-Term Holders Sell—Can BTC Reclaim $86K?

Key Insights:

  • Bitcoin faces strong resistance at $86,100 as short-term holders lock in losses.
  • Derivatives market shows rising short positions, signaling cautious sentiment among traders.
  • MVRV ratio drops to 1.8, pushing Bitcoin into oversold territory with potential for recovery.

Bitcoin price short-term holders, specifically those who acquired BTC in the past one to three months, have exited the market with a combined realized loss of $100 billion since February. This cohort, often sensitive to price movements, has seen the value of its holdings decline, leading many to sell at a loss.

Data shows that by now the market capitalization (MC) of these holdings is lower than their realized capitalization (RC). This implies that short-term holders are locked in at losses and are consequently contributing to selling pressure. While this will make long term holders sell their stocks at lower prices, it may also help to decrease the excess supply in the market.

Bitcoin Price Key Resistance and Support Levels

Currently, Bitcoin is working to set a challenge back in key price levels, resisting at $83,000. As for short term holders (STHs) in the one week to six month range, they are sitting on realized price of $91,800 based on this data, meaning many of them are holding BTC at a loss.

The $86,100 price point is one of the most critical levels in the sense that it corresponds to the realized price of the three- to six-month STH cohort. This group represents the biggest portion of the current realized capitalization comprising short term investors which makes it a big resistance zone. Thus, if Bitcoin reaches this level, it may find itself in higher pressure of selling.

On the downside, the six- to twelve-month long-term holder (LTH) cohort has a realized price of $63,700. Additionally, the highest trading volume over the past year has been concentrated around $64,000, making this a strong support level.

Bitcoin Derivatives Market Reflects Bearish Sentiment

Open Interest (OI) in the Bitcoin derivatives market has declined, while short positions have increased, according to CryptoQuant analysts. A look at the “taker buy to sell position” chart suggests that traders are becoming more cautious, with many expecting further downside.

This shift in sentiment indicates growing uncertainty in the market. The increase in short positions suggests that traders are hedging against potential declines, reinforcing the idea that the market could remain volatile in the near term.

Market Enters Oversold Territory Following Correction

The Bitcoin market had reached an oversold state because of Bitcoin’s recent correction. In March the percentage of BTC held for less than one month increased to 23% and in December to 24.5%. Which looks similar to a previous correction.

A key indicator of price conditions, the Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) ratio has fallen down to 1.8. Approaching the 2024 low of 1.71. This metric could be headed for similar levels as other correction lows if bitcoin were to fall to the $70,000 area.

Despite weak sentiment and decreased altcoin prices, analysts are looking at various factors such as whale activity. Macro trends to anticipate a market recovery. However, risks are still present and the fact the current situation is oversold could indicate a potential recovery not too far off.
