Key Insights:
- Moody’s U.S. credit downgrade prompts broader risk asset pullback.
- Bitcoin derivatives volume surges amid rapid position turnover.
- An average 200-week rise signals an early bull phase, analysts note.
Bitcoin price dropped this week after reaching recent highs. The decline was driven by investor caution following the downgrade of U.S. sovereign debt.
Moody’s Ratings lowered the U.S. long-term credit rating from Aaa to Aa1. They cited rising national debt and increasing interest costs as key reasons.
Investors shifted away from riskier assets, leading to a decline in Bitcoin price. This happened despite Bitcoin showing strong momentum earlier in the month.

Bitcoin price dropped 0.8%, settling at $103,298 after hitting $107,060 in overnight trading. This marks its highest level in nearly four months before pulling back.
BTC was priced at $103,830 at the time of reporting. It saw a 1.29% drop in the past 24 hours and a 0.61% decrease over the last seven days.
The decline mirrored broader market trends. Investor sentiment was affected by uncertainty over upcoming fiscal policy discussions.
U.S. Downgrade Triggers Risk-Off Sentiment,
The downgrade came as Moody’s pointed to the country’s expanding $36 Trillion debt and rising borrowing costs. Analysts noted that the announcement added pressure on markets already wary of fiscal negotiations in Congress.
The Moody’s action follows similar downgrades by Fitch in 2023 and Standard & Poor’s in 2011. Analysts at Tolou Capital Management in New York stated that such credit actions usually increase borrowing costs. These higher expenses affect both the public and private sectors in the U.S.
White House spokesperson Kush Desai criticized the rating agency’s timing and past performance. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed the downgrade as a delayed reaction. Both officials downplayed the significance of the rating change.
Surging Bitcoin Price & Derivatives Market: Increased Trading Activity & Volatility
In parallel, the Bitcoin derivatives market substantially increased trading volume. Total derivatives volume surged 137.84% to $164.24 Billion, reflecting intensified speculative activity or increased institutional participation.

Open interest on futures and options contracts rose slightly by 0.95% to $69.85 Billion. It implies that new positions are opening and closing more frequently than expected.
In the past 12 hours, $48.28 Million was liquidated. Over $40 Million was from liquidated long positions, while $8 Million was from short positions.
In the past 24 hours, $156.92 Million in positions were liquidated, with $87.20 Million from longs and $69.72 Million from shorts. The volatility in Bitcoin price reflects traders swiftly adapting to shifting market trends.
Indicators Point Toward Gradual Bullish Momentum for Bitcoin Price
Bitcoin price has dropped recently, but analysts remain confident in the industry’s long-term resilience. They believe this movement won’t weaken its future growth.
The CEO of Blockstream, Adam Back, mentioned that the 200-week moving average (200WMA) of Bitcoin has gone above $47,000.
This indicator smooths short-term volatility. It has historically acted as a floor price for Bitcoin and is widely used to assess macro trend shifts.

According to Back, the 200WMA stood at $40,000 in October 2024 but has steadily risen. The current growth rate is 2–6% per month, which is slower than before. In past bull cycles like 2012–2014 and 2017–2018, the indicator increased by over 10–15%.
Chart data between 2012 and 2025 confirms that this metric typically steepens during bull phases. Analysts consider the recent climb in the 200WMA as indicative of an early-stage bull cycle.
Color-coded trend indicators now suggest Bitcoin is within an expansionary phase. Chart visuals show that the prevailing color range has shifted to blue and light purple. It has historically corresponded with gradual upward trends.
Bitcoin price surged from $46,000 to over $47,000 in just 30 days. This strengthens the case for further gains ahead.
Arthur Hayes on Bitcoin’s Path to $200,000 and the Impending Altcoin Surge
Meanwhile, discussions at Token2049 in Dubai brought new insights about potential future market shifts. Arthur Hayes stated that Bitcoin must break decisively above the $110,000 mark for an altcoin season to begin.
Bitcoin price reached $109,114 in January but could not remain above that. Hayes believes that if BTC surpasses $110,000, the price could increase. He predicts it might reach $150,000 to $200,000 by summer or the third quarter of 2025.
Hayes predicts that more investors will sell Bitcoin to take a profit. He expects that these funds could then shift into the altcoin market. A shift could happen, as in the past, when altcoins strengthened after big surges in Bitcoin.
