Key Insights:
- BlackRock buys $430M in Bitcoin, boosts ETF inflow streak.
- U.S. Bitcoin ETFs record $2.75B in weekly inflows.
- Ethereum sees $52.8M inflow as institutional demand grows.
BlackRock added $430 million in Bitcoin, leading a \$2.75 billion ETF inflow week. Ethereum also saw $52.8 million in institutional purchases, signaling growing demand as crypto markets hover near record highs and investor sentiment shifts.
Bitcoin ETF Inflows Surge With BlackRock Leading the Charge
Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) based in the U.S. recorded $2.75 billion in inflows this week, their highest weekly figure in over a month. The capital influx came as Bitcoin (BTC) held above $108,000 and briefly touched a new all-time high of $111,970 earlier this week.
According to data from Farside Investors, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) alone added $430.8 million in inflows on May 23. This marks the fund’s eighth consecutive day of positive flows, further cementing IBIT’s dominance in the spot ETF race.
The spike in investor demand follows broader market strength after Bitcoin broke its previous high of $109,000. However, not all ETF issuers saw the same traction. Grayscale’s GBTC shed $89.2 million, while ARK 21Shares’ ARKB recorded $73.9 million in outflows on the same day.
Despite mixed flows across providers, total inflows have positioned Bitcoin ETFs to potentially surpass their previous monthly record of $6.49 billion set in Nov. 2024. With five trading days left in May, total inflows already stand near $5.39 billion.
BlackRock’s Conviction Extends Beyond Bitcoin
BlackRock also continued to expand its Ethereum holdings. On-chain data highlighted a $52.8 million ETH purchase by the firm this week. The move comes amid growing anticipation for spot Ethereum ETF approvals, following the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s recent shift in posture toward Ethereum-based products.
Crypto commentator Ash Crypto flagged both moves in a pair of posts on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“🇺🇲BLACKROCK JUST BOUGHT $430.8M WORTH OF BITCOIN. WHALES KEEP LOADING 🔥”
“BLACKROCK JUST BOUGHT $52.8M WORTH OF ETHEREUM. BULLISH 🚀”

Market participants have largely interpreted the twin purchases as a continuation of institutional conviction in the crypto space, especially as spot ETFs show growing demand from both retail and professional investors.
Market Sentiment Pulls Back Amid Record-High Prices
Despite record inflows, market sentiment showed signs of cooling. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index fell from 78 to 66 in the past 24 hours, signaling a retreat from “Extreme Greed” territory. The decline reflects increased profit-taking and heightened caution as Bitcoin hovers near uncharted territory.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $108,141, according to CoinMarketCap. Although it is down slightly from the week’s high, analysts have remained optimistic about further upside.
In a post on May 22, CryptoQuant analyst Crypto Dan said Bitcoin’s metrics remain healthy:
“Overheating indicators such as the funding rate and short-term capital inflow remain low compared to previous peaks, and profit-taking by short-term investors is limited.”
This view suggests that the rally may have more room to run, particularly as capital continues to pour into ETFs.
Bitcoin ETFs Poised for New Monthly Record
The broader data points to a possible shift in Bitcoin’s investor base. The first-time inflows streak since April indicates sustained interest, with BlackRock at the center. As of this week, IBIT has absorbed the majority of new capital, outpacing rivals and reinforcing BlackRock’s position as the top institutional ETF provider.
The previous week’s ETF inflows stood at just $608 million. This week’s $2.75 billion total marks a near 4.5x increase. Bitcoin ETFs recorded $607.1 million in a single day on May 21, the same day BTC breached $109,000.
Although prices have slightly declined from the weekly peak, institutional accumulation has shown no signs of slowing. If the pace of inflows persists, May could close with new records, reinforcing the growing correlation between ETF flows and price trends.
Grayscale’s declining flows reflect an ongoing shift away from legacy funds with higher fees, while newer products like IBIT attract fresh capital due to improved liquidity and tracking performance.
Ethereum Joins the Spotlight as Institutional Demand Grows
Ethereum’s inflows, though smaller in scale, suggest that institutions may be positioning ahead of the expected spot ETH ETF rollout. While the timeline remains uncertain, BlackRock’s Ethereum accumulation signals early preparation.

The asset manager’s dual bet on Bitcoin and Ethereum reflects growing confidence that regulatory barriers are softening and that demand for crypto-backed products is durable.
With Bitcoin holding above key levels and ETF flows accelerating, market watchers now await whether other asset managers will follow BlackRock’s lead—or if this week’s surge marks a local top.
