Recession Risk Falls To 28%: Will Crypto Rally on Soft-Landing?

Key Highlights

  • U.S. recession odds drop from 70% to 28%, boosting investor confidence in risk assets.
  • Bitcoin climbs past $105K as institutional holdings and ETF flows strengthen market momentum.
  • Interest rate cut hopes rise, supporting bullish momentum in crypto.

Fears of a recession are quickly diminishing in 2025. The soft-landing narrative has been validated as the U.S. recession probability dropped from 70% to 28%.

Crypto markets are responding positively, with Bitcoin, altcoins, and institutional interest gaining momentum. This renewed strength reflects broader macroeconomic relief.

Recession Risks Fall, But Growth Still Slows

Kalshi data shows the probability of a U.S. recession has dropped sharply to 28%, from 70% last month. The U.S.–China tariff escalation has been scaled back, improving global sentiment.

This change has eased investor concerns. J.P. Morgan forecasts slower growth, but no outright recession.

Market analysts say that reduced policy risk and less aggressive trade measures are behind the drop in recession odds. A smaller tariff burden means less consumption drag and immediate economic shock than in previous cycles.

Yet growth is still anaemic, with Q3 and Q4 U.S. GDP projected to grow at an annualized rate of just 0.25%. J.P. Morgan has revised China’s 2025 GDP forecast to 3% annualized (from 1.3% annualized), which is still below potential.

Despite improved sentiment, global growth is now at 1.3%, which is expected to stay slow, perhaps through 2026.

Crypto Rises on Soft-Landing Bets and Policy Shifts

The shift in macro outlook has been greeted positively by crypto markets. Bitcoin rose 11.1% in May to a new all-time high of $111,784. Fewer rate hikes and steadier growth are bullish signals for risk assets, as investors see them.

According to the Kalshi report, traders expect Federal Reserve rate cuts to resume by December 2025. Policymakers could start loosening by Q4 as inflation eases and recession risks fall.

There is a 64% chance that Fed Chair Powell will mention credit in the following press briefing. This suggests he will emphasize credit conditions and employment.

New labour data had former President Donald Trump publicly calling for immediate rate cuts. Global central banks have already moved, with Europe making nine cuts this cycle, and the political pressure is mounting.

A follow-up by U.S. policy could reinforce optimism across equities and crypto. This has led to the rise of investor appetite for digital assets. Bitcoin and altcoins have led the way. It tends to be more sensitive to liquidity and market sentiment, and has followed.

Macro liquidity trends drive price behaviour, and the total altcoin market cap now mirrors the Global M2 Money Supply Index.

Institutional Adoption Expands as Bitcoin Gains Strength

Bitcoin’s market behaviour is increasingly correlated with stock markets during economic stress. Bitcoin tends to move with traditional assets during uncertainty, but can move differently when sentiment stabilizes.

Data now indicate that crypto is moving into a period of closer correlation with other market cycles. Additionally, the institutionaladoption is picking up speed. BlackRock now holds 659,892 BTC ($69.59B) and 1.396M ETH ($3.7B) in assets.

MicroStrategy has also accumulated 580,955 BTC, which has delivered a 16.9% YTD yield on its position. The exposure is rising, and crypto is increasingly linked to macro trends and improving market liquidity.

Elon Musk recently echoed this outlook. He responded to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong’s warning on U.S. debt. Musk stated that uncontrolled fiscal policy could push Bitcoin to replace the U.S. dollar as the reserve currency.

Meanwhile, Kalshi markets now estimate a 60% probability of a “Trump economic boom.” This reflects growing expectations of lower taxes. Less regulation is also becoming a key factor in economic forecasts.

A dovish fiscal outlook from a possible Trump administration would encourage more risk-on behaviour. This would favor high-volatility asset classes such as cryptocurrencies.

Altcoin Volumes Surge on Liquidity Signals

The key driver of altcoin cycles remains liquidity. Price follows volume, and rising global M2 money supply is a leading indicator. When liquidity expands, investors tend to rotate into altcoins to get higher returns than what Bitcoin or stocks can offer.

The altcoin market is acting as a high-beta proxy for global liquidity flows. Risk-on rotations are back as interest rates may have peaked and growth stabilized.

Speculative bets on AI-linked coins, Ethereum ecosystem tokens, and Solana-based projects are also included.
