Coinbase Global Inc. (COIN) surged 3.6% on Thursday, closing at its highest level since its 2021 IPO. The rally placed COIN within 2% of its record close of $357.39 from Nov. 2021.
Strong Bitcoin prices, Circle’s IPO, and growing institutional inflows supported the stock’s breakout.
Coinbase Stock Nears ATH as Institutions Buy In
Coinbase stock jumped to an intraday high of $370.60 before pulling back to $352 by midday. The 3.6% gain came as Bitcoin held above $107,000 and institutional participation expanded.
Year-to-date, COIN gained over 42%, outperforming major indices and ranking as the week’s top S&P 500 performer. Ark Invest added 4,200 shares across its ETFs, and Benchmark raised its target to $421 from $301.
Analysts cited Circle’s surge—from $31 to over $200—as a tailwind. Coinbase holds equity in Circle and co-manages the USDC stablecoin. Its exposure to stablecoin infrastructure directly links to market optimism.
The institutional narrative continues to build. Coinbase now acts as custodian for multiple U.S.-listed Bitcoin ETFs and supports integrations for 200 financial institutions.
Rising Bitcoin Prices Add Fuel to the Rally
Coinbase’s rally comes as Bitcoin trades between $100,000 and $110,000, according to recent on-chain data from Glassnode.
Bitcoin’s stability in this range reflects a cooling of profit-taking, declining futures volume, and softening spot activity. However, the long-term cost basis of short-term holders continues to rise, suggesting a resilient investor base.

Total Bitcoin transfer volume has declined recently, indicating a cautious tone in broader trading. Futures open interest and volumes have also pulled back from their peaks, signaling hesitation among speculators.
Yet despite the muted on-chain activity, COIN continues to decouple from BTC volatility due to its diversified revenue streams.
Coinbase is less dependent on trading fees today than in 2021, with rising income from subscriptions and custody services. Q1 2025 revenue rose 24.2% year-over-year to $2.03 billion, while its subscription and services revenue climbed 36.3% to $698.1 million.
The company’s pivot toward long-term revenue sources has given it a valuation floor even during Bitcoin pullbacks.
Regulatory Tailwinds Strengthen Coinbase’s Position
Regulatory progress has been another key factor behind Coinbase’s breakout. The recent passage of the GENIUS Act, which introduces a federal framework for stablecoins, has reignited investor optimism.
This legislation is expected to broaden stablecoin use in banking and fintech, sectors where Coinbase already has significant infrastructure.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong confirmed that the company is now powering integrations for around 200 U.S. financial institutions. Coinbase also serves as custodian for several U.S.-listed Bitcoin ETFs, cementing its importance in crypto’s growing institutional layer. With the GENIUS Act in place, these services are expected to gain wider adoption.
Meanwhile, analysts from Bernstein have upgraded Coinbase, calling it the “Amazon of crypto financial services.” They cited its expanding portfolio, which now includes Prime brokerage, Base blockchain, institutional custody, and stablecoin issuance partnerships. The company’s diversification has helped it weather market cycles and grow its market share.
Broader Market Supports Risk-On Sentiment
The gains of Coinbase were accompanied by a wider run on U.S. equity markets that boosted all forms of risk assets. The S&P 500 increased by 0.54%, Nasdaq by 0.57% and the Dow by 0.55%. The Russell 2000 small-cap index rose 0.62%, which reflected widespread investor involvement in growth stocks.
In the meantime, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) decreased by 1.79 to 16.46, which indicates a low level of fear in the market and a change toward risk appetite. The prices of gold decreased by 0.33%, and the move out of safe havens could also be seen as more crypto-related equities were bought.
The two reasons why Coinbase has shot upwards seem to contain an element of company fundamental along with another element of nice macro.
With an existing market capitalisation of $89.6 billion, Coinbase is one of the top crypto-native firms in the world. Should the stock go above 340 this week, it would find itself in price discovery-zone on a first-time basis since it issued its IPO. With such momentum and institutional liquidity, analysts feel that now a rally to 1,000 is within.
